Ok, how bad is this... I bought the heatsink and I don't even HAVE an Athlon 64 yet! Leave it to the Mechwarrior junkie to have an uncontrollable urge to buy heatsinks...

As I note at the bottom of the page, there doesn't seem to be a provision for using 38mm-thick fans unless you want to get a little creative. Unlike the PAL8045 and PAL8942, the bolts are designed to go all the way through both faces of the fan, not just the bottom face.

Alpha, why oh why did you not make it slightly larger to support 92mm fans! I suppose it's for clearance issues, as the 8045 is already very wide. Swiftech's 92mm compatible heatsink is angled out like a flower, so I suppose they're reaching the limit of how big they can make these things at the base.

The MCX4000 can take 92mm fans, and its not that flowering shape. Just has standoffs. Im sure other companies could add something similar.

You'd think that with all the crazy ideas and R&D Thermalright comes up with these day, Alpha would take a hint and try to come up witha new design... Don't get me wrong, the Alpha heatsinks are very good and I loved my PAL8045 to death, but the design is outdated and gets outperformed by many current designs.

I think one of their main limitations is that they forge the heatsink into shape. For instance, Soulkeeper mentioned that they didn't rib the pins... well, with forging, that would be essentially impossible. I do agree that if they could somehow duct a 92mm fan onto there...

Bigger picture: from what I keep reading, heat doesn't really seem to be the limiting factor in A64 overclocking anyway (yet). It's deja vu back to the days of the venerable A7V and the KT133 chipset, where the chipset could only manage about a 10% OC (although the multiplier adjustment turned out to open up all sorts of OC fun regardless).

Yeah, my A64-3000+ runs in the low 30's all day long with the STOCK HSF. I think it hits like 39c at load!
