First of all - GREAT JOB !!!

I hope I do HALF as well when I get to building in MY P180.

I have a question for you if you will. You have a new RED-colored fan mounted in the back of the case. This one looks "thicker" than the clear Coolermaster u were originally using. Is this red-colored fan a 120mm X 25mm or a 120mm X 38mm fan like the thickness of the fan provided by Antec for the lower chamber ???

Thanks for a response,

Greg

The fan is orange, and it is the same exact thickness of the older Coolermasters I had which is 120x25mm.

Thanks Dynamix3D

The reason I asked you about the fan is I want to use all 3 of the fans that come with the P180 in the upper chamber of the case; I'm aware of the different acoustical and air throughput ratings of the lower fan as compared to the top two fans as the manual is good to point out the differences.

Since I will probably mount my single Samsung 160GB Spinpoint SATA-150 hard drive in the upper drive cage I want to install a 120mm fan in the front mount. I hoped to mount the fan that comes in the bottom chamber in the mount on the BACK of the case and take the fan from the back of the case and mount it in the position in front of the upper hard drive cage. I'm just worried that the added thickness of the 120mm X 38mm fan may "interfere" with something if I install it in the upper chamber at the rear postion. What do you think ???

I also thougth about swapping the lower fan with the upper vent fan but my mobo (Asus A8N-SLI) has it's CPU located way to the far right of the mobo and I'm worried the extra thick 38mm fan might interfere with my CPU cooler or something. I have to believe there is a reason Antec went with 25mm fans for the two top positions.

May I ask you TWO more questions that have been hounding me ???

I've been studying (and learning) from your pics (ALL of which I have saved) for hours this morning and I've figured out a lot of your "secrets" but I have two that still bother me.

1) In your pics I can clearly see how you routed the top 120mm Coolermaster wire straight down to the nearby fan header near the top of your mobo but how did you route the wires for the 120mm Coolermaster back fan; the one that you used before the red one ??? I can't tell if the wires run under the mobo and connect to a fan header on the mobo or ???

2) The flat IDE cable you used for your two optical drives looks awfully long. How long is it ??? Where did you purchase it ???

BTW, in case anyone is interested, they are selling the same Coolermaster P/S that dynamix3D used for a song over here at NewEgg.

1. I just wrapped the wire around the fan till there was no slack, then plugged it into the fan header near the CPU heatsink. I no longer have any fans plugged into any fan headers. Now they are all plugged into my fan controller.

2. I am not sure how long it is. I think its pretty much normal size. Even if it wasn't I don't need a long one anyway. And the cable is just from an old system, so I have no idea where I got it from.

Thanks !

The reason I asked about the IDE cable is because once the lenght exceeds 18" then the ablity to run the drives at the highest Ultra DMA speeds becomes compromised; in fact the specification of even ATA-33 calls for an IDE cable no longer than 18".

BTW, you didn't comment on my dilemma over the case fans. Do you have any ideas/suggestions ???

Thanks,

Greg

Oh yea... the 120x38 fan will fit as the rear exhaust no problem... At least it did on my setup. I dunno about other setups where maybe the heatsink is closer to the fan. But regardless I wouldn't use it, because I had mine set up as the exhaust for about a week or 2, and I didn't like it at all. It was very loud, and the difference in airflow did nothing for temps, minimal to none compared to the low speed 120x25mm fans I have now.

Just so you know Kaspian; it will take a lot of no-how and experience to get a P180 (or a system in ANY case for that matter) looking as nice as dynamix3d's system with the great "clean" look resulting from his GREAT cable management.

That's odd that the larger 120mm X 38mm fan was LOUDER than the 120mm x 25mm Antec Tricools because the acoustic ratings listed in the P180 manual are LOWER for the thicker/larger 120mm bottom fan then the acoustic ratings for the two upper fans !!!

1) Why did you decide to remove the blue coolermaster fan from the rear/top fan mounting position and replace it with the orangish one ???

2) Is that orangish fan that you now have in the back the 120mm Nexus Real Quiet fan that was mentioned in the FIRST SilentPC review of the P180 case ??? If so, where can u purchase them ??? I can't find them at NewEgg.

3) If the orangish fan is NOT the Nexus, what brand and model is it, where do you purchase it and does it do a good job of venting air out of the back of the case ???

Thanks a lot !!!!

Greg

Dynamix,
Why didn't you close off the sliding panels between the lower compartment and the upper? Aren't you concerned about keeping PSU-generated heat out of the motherboard compartment?

I was wondering the same thing Ron, I played around with my plastic thingeys, and just like the manual says, you can slide them forward and lock them after you route your cables. By closing them as tightly as he can he can keep some heat generated by the P/S from reaching the upper compartment.

He's good about answering so I'm interested to see what his response will be.

Sorry to bother you AGAIN dynamix3d but I forgot to ask you what make and model of 120mm X 25mm fan you used for the upperchamber front fan mount (the one in front of the upper drive bay).

Is it another blue Coolermaster or something else ???

Thanks,

Greg

1. I removed the Coolermaster because I wanted a quiet fan without LED's, and everyone says that the Yate Loon/Nexus fans are really silent.

2. The orange fan I have is a Yate Loon D12S12 which is the same fan as the Nexus. The Nexus is just a Yate Loon fan with a resistor to make it run at a lower speed. 1000rpm vs 1350rpm the Yate Loon runs at. Since I have a fan controller, I have the best of both worlds, because I have silence when I need it, and a faster spinning fan for when I need to cool things down.

3. I purchased the fans from someone in the Classifieds section on SPCR (Silent PC Review) forums. But you can purchase the Yate Loons or the Nexus fans over @ Jab-tech.com

I never really thought covering those holes would make a big difference since the power supply doesn't really get that hot I think to really effect the temps in the upper chamber. But maybe when I replace my motherboard this weekend, I'll try sealing it off to see if it helps any.

Dynamix, THANK YOU for your speedy replies. I appreciate knowing the difference between the Yate Loon and the Nexux; I was a little concerned about the roughly 36'ish CFM air output of the Nexus (I prefer using something around 42'ish to 46'ish for the rear fan). I will not be using a fan controller and won't have the benefit of being able to change fan speeds so I think the Yate-Loon is a better choice as a rear case fan for my setup. Thanks again for your help and additional congratulations on a JOB WELL DONE !

May I ask what make and model of 120mm X 25mm fan you used for the upperchamber front fan mount (the one in front of the upper drive bay) and its CFM and acoustical ratings ???

Thanks,

Greg

BTW, you mention in response to someone else's post that you will be replacing your motherboard.

What board are you going to use ???

Will you please post some more of your excellent pics after you replace the motherboard ???

Greg

Yes I will be replacing my motherboard tomorrow actually. Along with my video card. I am putting in a Asus A8N SLI Premium motherboard, with a brand new eVGA 7800GTX video card. Also in the very near future I plan on getting either a Thermalright XP-120 or a Scythe Ninja, I still really cannot decide which I prefer, but I definately want to replace the Zalman with something quieter. The reason being, although the Zalman is quiet on low speeds, when you crank it up it starts to become really loud and annoying with its high pitch whine. And it is definately the loudest fan I have in my case when it is cranked up. Having the XP-120 or the Scythe Ninja will allow for even better cooling with less noise. So thats always a plus.

Oh and of course I will post some pictures for you guys to see.

I would recommed the XP90...smaller and easier to fit on the mobos and there is little difference in cooling..I have used both a 92mm Panaflo BX and Vantec Stealth fan on DFI SLI-DR..temps are ~ the same the Panaflo is louder at full speed and moves more air..the Vantec is very quiet..20dba @27cfm vs 28dba@43cfm on the Panaflo Bx

I got all my fans at Jabtech...very fast processing and shipping

Smaller is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. If I wanted to use a 92mm fan, I'd just keep the Zalman 7000B-Cu that I have right now. The whole point of me upgrading to the Scythe Ninja (I ordered it today by the way) was so that I can use a quiet 120mm fan, and have better performance while I'm at it. My new setup should be even more quiet than my current when at full speed for two reasons. 1. My new motherboard, the A8N SLI Premium has no fan on the northbridge, and 2. my CPU Heatsink will have a 120mm fan, so it will be much less quiet, than the high speed 92mm Zalman.

I agree with Nealh; I have a friend who earlier this summer built a new system in an Antec Sonata II. Asus A8N-E/A64 3200+ Venice/2 GB Corsair Twinx PC-3200/74 GB Raptor/ATI x800xl, etc... He went with the aluminum Thermalright XP-90 (not the 120) with a Panaflo 90mm fan. He is very quiet-conscious (one of those silentpcreview guys too) and felt it does a very good job of cooling along with being silent. The only noisy fan left in his system, his ATI x800xl stock videocard fan, was replaced with a Zalman VF700 ALCu.

Anyway, I'd spend the little extra and go with the FULL COPPER version of the Thermalright XP-90 like this one.

Greg

EDIT:

Sorry, didn't see your reply to Nealh that you already ordered the Scythe Ninja .
