Thanx, my sis just bought a 6 meg, but found a 5 meg for considerable price differance. I told her to take it back and get the cheaper one. Just wanted to check with the finest opinions around!

unless she's making large-sized prints, then she wont notice the difference between 5 & 6 MP

and its CANON

you like'em so much but can't even spell their name right, lol

You may want to look for reviews of the particular cameras in question.

The CCD is the most important aspect of digital cameras. A 4 MP camera can spank a 6 MP camera with a crappy CCD. I own an Olympus 5060W and even though its 5mp the pics look fantastic.

I have had a lot of experience with the Canon PowerShot A530 and have enjoyed it a lot.
Takes great pictures and is easy on the batteries. 4X optical zoom and 5 MPixels is a great combination at a great price. The A540 is the same 4X optical zoom but has 6 MPixels and a larger screen on the back and costs quite a bit more. The larger screen means ~10% shorter battery life if you are using the screen, but I'm sure it would be a good camera as well. If I was making the decision again, I would stick with the A530.

I'd say that 5MP is the lowest that you want to go. 5 and 6 MP show little difference, but in my experience 4-5MP is a good jump. 4MP for me is just teetering on not having enough resolution to make a crystal clear 8x10.

Because it doesn't sound like the OP (nor the OP's sister) has any first hand experience with the 5 MP model, and most stores are not especially accomodating to those that want first hand experience.

Or just because good reviews are convenient and help save time; first hand experience is great, but most people don't have time to get adequate first hand experience with every single model available.

if you're shooting indoor shots
Image stabilization (IS) is probably the feature you're actually going to look for
the mpx wont really make a difference. especailly 4-5mpx

Wow, the two new Canon ELPH digicams look awesome. SD900 @ 10MP and SD800 IS @ 7.1MP. Notice the SD800 has optical Image Stabilizer. They sell for the same price! The PowerShot G7 (10MP) was also announced. More info @ DPReview. Oooh, the A710 IS looks nice too. It just might be the upgrade I've been waiting for.
