cept the problem with dubai is that its in the middle east with all its sh*ttiness. its relatively decent compared to the rest...but thats a low standard which is why they succeed.

Why can't we have a city like Dubai here in the US? The closest we have is Disneyworld.

We do... it's called Las Vegas

Dubai is Las Vegas x 10.

Las Vegas doesn't really compare.

I read that DubaiWorld, a themepark, is going to be bigger than Orlando, the CITY that Disney world is in.

Disney is not inside Orlando, its like 20+ miles south of the city in it's own area.

Disney and Orlando have little to do with each other. I should know, I lived there for 14 years.

Edit: You also might do some research on the actual SIZE (land area) of Orlando - it isn't small.

Ahh my bad. I'm just spitting out something I remember hearing. Maybe it was "downtown orlando"

Wow. I can't wait until the United States levels that place! Those terrorists look like they are making WAY too much money there! Those bastards are spending all of our gas profits!

Read the thread..less than 5% of their GDP comes from oil.

Actually it is almost 40%. They expect to lower that to about 30% by 2010.

http://uaeinteract.com/docs/UA...o_exceed_70_/28130.htm

That's for the entire UAE, Dubai itself is 5%..

You do know that the Middle East is made up of more than just the Axis Of Evil, right?

Dubai is all pro-western glitz and glamour. Big shopping malls, golf courses, ultra-luxury hotels, and all the western amenities you want.

Kuwait, which is also pro-western, is also seeing a construction boom as they try and compete with Dubai and Abu Dhabi for tourism dollars.

Dubai has changed a lot since I was there in 1986. Back then everywhere looked like that first picture on that site.

Dubai has come a long way, but a lot of it comes at the expense of hazardous work conditions and poorly paid (if at all) workers...not the kind of system we want here

The ultra wealthy needs someplace to live after GW finishes destroying the middle class.
And those left are fighting for a scrap of bread in a desert land.
Too optimistic?

The city looks stunning; but business capital of the world it is not. See N.Y., London, Tokyo, for world business capitals. Although I suppose Dubai may be the business capital in the middle east. I'd like to visit some day.

so, are you just discovering Dubai, or what? what is this thread about, anyway?

I'm just amazed that the Burj-Dubai, the tallest tower on Earth, will be completed this year. It began construction in 2003. Yet our new World Trade Center hasn't even been started. America falls behind again.

Yes cause it was planned and constructed in 5 years....

Planning took almost 2 years, and then 5 years to build it. 7 years total. Yeah, they are beating us.

Also the fact thats its twice as tall as the freedom tower (excluding gigantic spire) is kind of embarrassing too if you are into that sort of thing.

Coming from Dubai, I'd say that it has its fair share of problems... Mistreatment of the workers, high inflation rates making cost of living very high ( thus negating the benefit of no taxes which used to be a major perk at one time), traffic congestions problems and hence loss of productivity, etc. but, I still love it!

Isn't Dubai where you find beautiful whores from all over the world?

yup yup.. lotsa Russians though.

I had a layover in Dubai back in 2004. Then if you looked into the skyline you would see dozens of cranes on work on new buildings. Also is city is well planned out since they have much room to work with. The heat there is killer though, most outdoor things happen after 10PM. I got sick there from being outside (100+) then going inside (AC) as we went in and out of stores. Those living there were saying that since the water is stored on the roof, it gets real hot. If you want to take a bath you first have to store the water inside to cool it. Also only citizens are allowed to own property from what I've heard. So most there end up living in apartments, seems kinda silly with so much land available around the city that could support suburbs.

Don't these people get it: When you fuck with water, the water always fucks with you eventually unless you throw endless money at it? And even then you can be wiped out. What a money pit and future disaster.

The hot water thing is to a certain extent for certain buildings in Dubai..However, in my apartment building, the water is hot but not hot enough to burn me so I can take a bath directly without cooling it,etc. I guess thas probably why I like hot water baths.. Its nearly impossible to get cold water in the peak of summer when temps outside are 120F.

Don't these American bureaucrats get it: When you fuck with world, the world always fucks with you eventually unless you throw endless money at it? And even then you can be wiped out. What a money pit and future disaster.

Alcohol is purchased from I believe 2 agents in Dubai. You need a "Alcohol license" to buy alcohol for personal consumption at home. To get the alcohol license, they look at your salary. Your salary needs to be above a certain range to prove to them that you do not use up your life's savings on alcohol.. Alcohol is available at hotels, bars, etc and the drinking age is 21+.

I like the 1990 vs. 2003 pic. That's cool, and yet amazingly scary too.

The white building in the 1990 pic is what I live in. Back then, people never wanted to even come to that road since it was deserted and all sand. It was a pain getting a cab ( or so my parents say ). Now, its one of the most busy highways in the emirate..

As a matter of fact, yes. I was thinking just that, but then it occured to me this building is going to full of Arabs, so they're sort of safe I guess.

Anyway, the photos look pretty neat, though you have to keep in mind they were photochopped. Another draw back to the place is that during summer temps. there are well over a 100, its a frigging inferno, you can't really go outside unless its to the pool or something like that.

I have a coworker who is from Dubai. He said that what you just said is ABSOLUTELY false. According to him, Dubai is more liberal than where we live right now (central NJ)...and I believe him. He was telling me some amazing stories about Dubai. They have the best escort service there in the world.

There's lotsa westerners in Dubai. 80% of population are expatriates so its very cosmopolitan. Definately not the middle east that FOX portrays
