I bought the XT a few weeks back (Dell 15% off + I think $95 off deal), and I've been so busy that I haven't really had a chance to take any pictures. I decided to cruise to the park and take some sunset pictures over Lake Erie. I'm just learning the camera, so I didn't really get to maximize the potential of the sunset. Anyway, the pictures aren't great, but I love this camera...

Just when the sun started to elongate. The exposure is off.
The sun has set.
Playing with the exposure a bit. I really like the way the water looks in this one.
A seriously underexposed picture of downtown Cleveland taken when walking back to my car.

That's all.

Eerie. Surprised there's not an orange hue rising from that lake. J/K, got to love the Great Lakes huh? Is it Ohio that has Hang on Sloopy as the official State song?

Thanks all! The water looks beautiful during a sunset, and sitting on the rocks with the cool breeze is great.

Tip: If you're having trouble with picking the right exposure, shoot in RAW mode. That way you can adjust the exposure later... as many times as you want.

Tip2: You may actually want to take the shots underexposed. That should give you a bit more contrast.

GO BROWNS! (so sad...)

Great... Now I'm homesick... *sniff*

Seriously though, I really do miss the great lakes.

Don't call them witches, that is so politically incorrect. I like to use the term "Magically Inclined Person."

BTW: Nice pics!

RAW helps with exposure but you still need to get close. You certainly can't adjust "as many times as you want" w/o degrading the quality of the picture. However, you can develop the picture twice, once for the highlights and once for the shadows and overlay them in Photoshop. If done properly, it can really bring out some nice detail

That is completely wrong but a common mistake. With a DSLR, you do not want to under expose. If the histogram has room to the right, you want to increase your exposure. Under-exposure limits your dynamic range and causes increased noise. Not good.

What kind of post-processing did you do? Any sharpening? You can even out the exposure in Photoshop pretty easily.

The lake always looks great at sunrise/sunset because you cant tell the water is black/green until theres more light

Great pics, ive always wanted to go take pics of lake erie sunsets but im just too lazy ( i can see the lake from my window, its less than 1500 feet to shore).
