They made the 10GB version 10% smaller, the 10GB and 20GB versions now have solid state scroll devices instead of the scroll wheel (1 less moving part, higher reliability), and that's about it...besides making a PC version of the iPod.

there's much more changes than that buddy. if you've kept up with it you would know.

Whats so new? looks the same. Except with a crappy remote (remotes with no LCD display = useless)

but that's new tech for ya.

Not only that, but its Apple for yah. They tend to over charge a bit.

I really really like the iPod, but I think I'm going with the Nomad 3. I can get the 20 gig version for $350, I won't need a firewire card (yeah, USB 1.1 is slow, but I only need to transfer a lot once), and I don't have to wait a month or so.

I'd buy the iPod in a heartbeat, if it was priced more competitively with the rest of the hdd based mp3 players.

New:
10 gig version is thinner. 20 gig version available (slightly thicker than the previous 10 gig). Scroll wheel is now solid state, rather than a moving part (as said before one less moving part to break). New headphones (but they probably still suck), inline remote (yeah yeah, no LCD), protective case, and oh yeah, the PC version with MusicMatch.

Thats about it I think.

I think it is correctly priced. The reason it's more is because it's smaller and lighter than any others. When the 5GB model was introduced, the quantity price of it's hard drive was $399, the same as Apple charged for the iPod. I'm sure Apple paid less for the drives, but not a whole lot less.

Yeah I was reading MediaFours forums yesterday and noticed that the new Mac versions still work with XPlay. But the money is still an issue to me. $350 +s/h (about $15 from MWave) total for a Nomad 3 with 20 gigs. Or $500 for iPod with 20 gigs, $30 for firewire card, $30 for XPlay, total of $560 not including s/h or tax. So the equivilent iPod will cost me over $200 more than the Nomad 3.

I mean I could afford it, but do I really want to?

I don't know about the 20gig version. I got the 5gig version to put music that I don't already have cd's for on it. I can connect it to my cd player in my car using an audio output and into my friend's cars using a tape adapter.

The coolest features that i have found the most useful are the backlight, the contacts function, the ease of use on the computer (xplay is incredibly simple), and the speed of it all. I got on my computer last night, ripped 4 cds, uploaded them, and was listening to them all in about an hour.

Plus, it is tiny, so it fits easily into my pocket, and the 10 hour battery is perfect for long days at work or school

edit: oh yeah, if you are a student, some apple stores give a student discount. I got $30 off of mine when I went.

What color is the backlight? As far as looks go, I still like the old silver Rio 500 with blue backlight screen over any other MP3 player's looks.

I can't say I care much for the white plastic color of the ipod.

The AC adapter is spiffy though.

The backlight is an indiglo aqua kind of blue/green, leaning more towards blue. It is really bright

I was just about to pull the trigger on the old 10GB version for $499 and use XPlay. Luckily I caught wind of the newer versions, lower prices, official Windows support, smaller size and free accessories. But it was 5-7 weeks for delivery, so I almost bought the older version, but the lack of a firewire cover bugs me as I sweat like a horse at the gym.

So I am waiting for the "ships in 24 hours" sign from the apple store or similar. I did some research and I personally think the ipod can not be beat in terms of size, capacity and sound. I have my sights set on the 10gb for $399 because it is the smallest, but I may go for the 20 gigger.

Here is a thread I posted here looking for ipod alternatives. I will have to see what the Nomad 3 is all about, but I must say, it would have to be a killer, because I swore off Creative!

EDIT - just like to add, that I am pretty sure the hardware is identical for the Apple and Windows version, just the software is different. I have to wonder if these sucker would just show up as removable hdd in explorer as I hate MusicMatch and loath the thought of having to use it. If this was the case, I would check out XPlay.

I dunno where some of you are getting your information from, but according to the
apple website, the LCD is NOT blue. It's still has the white backlight.

I personally like the blue backlit LCD's much better.

I'm waiting for the gigabeat to come out.
more info on it here.

Remember Toshiba makes the hard drives for the IPOD anyways.

LarryJoe according to the forums over at MediaFour, the current version of XPlay works with the new version of the Mac iPod. They are planning on coming out with a new version of XPlay to work with the Windows one. So you can go ahead and buy the Mac iPod and get it to work.

The difference between the Windows and Mac versions is the internal file format. Well at least that is what everyone thinks. So the Mac version will be the HFS+ and the Windows fat32.

I'm interested in the Nomad because the physical size of the iPod is not a deciding factor for me. I already have a solid state mp3 player thats hold 256 megs for the gym. I would be using this while in the car, at work, and on travel (airplanes/trains/etc...). And a $200 price difference is huge (20 gig Nomad 3 = $350 + s/h. 20 gig iPod = $500 + firewire card = $30 + XPlay = $30, total $560). Yeah I agree that its a Creative product and that is the only reason I haven't gone ahead and bought it.

And regarding the Gigabeat by Toshiba. There is still no date on when this is coming out. And if you think the iPod is expensive, I bet this one will be even moreso.
