'Piers Morgan' act would revoke need for gun license in Oklahoma

A State Senator has filed legislation that he says would 'reaffirm Oklahomans' Second Amendment rights' by not requiring law-abiding citizens to obtain a gun license.

State Sen. Nathan Dahm filed Senate Bill 1473, or what he calls the "Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act".

The bill proposes to allow citizens over the age of 18 to open carry loaded or unloaded guns without a license for hunting and target shooting. The bill would also cover military or law enforcement functions; for practice or performance for entertainment purposes; or for lawful self-defense purposes.

"The Second Amendment says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and yet when we require our citizens to jump through hoops, pay fees and undergo a process that presumes they're guilty of something until proven otherwise, their rights are being infringed upon," Dahm said in a press release. "Senate Bill 1473 simply says Oklahomans can carry firearms in all the places currently allowed by law, but they will no longer be required to obtain a license to do so."

If the bill passes, gun-free zones like schools and government facilities would still be off-limits. After learning of the act, Piers morgan tweeted "unbelievable" followed by an invitation to Dahm to come on his show to debate the act: "Hi Senator @NathanDahm - come on my show and debate your new 'Piers Morgan Act'. If you have the guts."

This story cracked me up when I read it a few days ago. It's got Piers panties all twisted up. I can barely think of a more deserving guy.

I think this is great. It puts law abiding citizens on the same level as criminals with respect to the ease of obtaining a firearm.

Passing laws to spite a TV personality is a clear sign of a responsible lawmaker.

13 months ago he threatened to deport himself if gun laws weren't changed to his liking. I guess it was just a temper tantrum because he's still here.

I'm no Piers fan but let me understand this correctly essentially anyone can show up and purchase a gun provided they don't have a criminal back ground?

Good. Piers Morgan is a complete idiot and his views on gun control are just idiotic. It's so easy to troll this moron.

anyone can exercise their right as long as they don't have a criminal background? imagine that!

does anyone need a license to vote? what about free speech? protection against self incrimination? freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures? and so on....

why does someone need a reason to exercise their right? it's a RIGHT. the very existence of that right is the only reason anyone needs to exercise it.

The law pertains to carrying in public, not purchasing. Current Oklahoma law requires you obtain a permit to legally openly carry a loaded firearm. This would amend state law to allow open carry without a permit (which about 1/4 of states in the US already allow).

A background check would still be required when purchasing a firearm from an FFL dealer.

edit: Didn't know if you were confused about this law or just wondering about how firearm purchases in general work in the US.

Here's an interesting photo, I got this from Bill Schulz's twitter.

Ann Coulter, judge Alex Ferrer, the wanker and of course Bill Schulz.

What confuses me about the whole thing is the idea of someone needing a license to open carry or target shoot. I realize you need one for hunting, which is semi-reasonable to limit what you take from a limited environment. I also don't seriously mind having to have a cpl for concealed carry (though it should be national), even though it's technically an unconstitutional infringement. But other than that, most places don't require any form of license or registration, which is as it should be. I wonder if Morgan realizes that the bill just brings the state inline with the status quo.

I see no particular issue with this bill. I'm kinda surprised a gun happy Midwest state like Oklahoma didn't already have this as law. I think putting Piers Morgan's name on the bill is stupid since I don't think he even has any connection with the state. It's childish trolling, which isn't exactly uncommon amongst republicans I guess.

I agree. If they want gun laws like this, no problem..it's their state. To put Morgan's name (he is a douche) on it however lowers them to his level and serves no purpose other than to rally up the extremes on this issue.
