Pile of ashes in my driveway?

I am out of town for work, but my wife called me today and told me that last night the dogs started going nuts. Then this morning she came outside and there was a pile of ashes (varying in size from fine dust to charcoal sized ashes), and sitting next to it was a feather.

This was located on our driveway next to our cars.

What the hell? I looked it up in case someone was fucking with us, but the only thing I can find relating to a pile of ashes and a feather is the phoenix, which is supposed to be a bird that dies in a self created fire, then rises from the ashes. http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Phoenix_(mythology)
