Lol nice.

Thing is, are there any rogue companions ? Or will we be able to create more than one character?

I am going into this game almost blind. I skimmed over the classes and recruitable companions ....that's about it .
There are no rogue, monk or barbarian recruitable companions (you can make your own of course). But in this case, a rogue isn't the 'class that opens locks', since stealth is a talent that is (mostly) independent of class, so you can be paladin and still be the one to open locks. Rogues are just a positional DPS class. They do start with 2 bonus in stealth so that's something.

Known issue, fix for me was deselect all DLC content from Steam games list library for Pillars of Eternity,(you do this by right click on "Pillars of Eternity" in games list and select "view downloadable content"), after you unticked all DLC boxes exit Steam, relaunch Steam and put a tick back in all the DLC contents,it should start the redownload with the correct contents installed this time,it was about 1.2gb for me for my Champion edition.

I confirmed by looking in the Program Files (x86)/Steam/ SteamApps then Common folder for Pillars of Eternity and all contents is there like map ,ring tones etc.

Thanks, that fixed it for me. Odd I had done that just on the library page for it but not on the right click menu.

6hrs in and its pretty good, can't match Planescape though. There are no generic tropes (yet) but the so-so voice acting isn't a good look. A lot is unvoiced and it should have stayed that way - one of the dead people you talk to sounds like someone trying way too hard to be an 80yr old granny. Other bits seem like intentional cheese. Its that bad.

The whole soul thing is interesting, so far I prefer Planescape's opening but its very promising. Combat is interesting, I read that there is no XP for it but it certainly seems like there is. Each action you take has a cooldown - you swing a sword, then wait until your character swings again, same with reloading bows and spells which is odd. There are ways to reduce this but your character basically stands there getting whacked until the cooldown resets every single time. Then tied into this is 8 different types of damage with 4 different ways to reduce it and a whole pile of passive and active abilities combined with stats that affect everything (especially accuracy).

I'm definitely enjoying this way more than Wasteland which I couldn't get into and Original Sin which I gave up on. Will work nicely till GTA V. Compared to modern RPGs, its actually refreshing to have a 1995 throwback. Don't mention the graphics though, they are serviceable and that is it.

Holy crap this game is a Balder's Gate clone. Not that I'm complaining, I'm loving it. But it's certainly a homage.

The beta had me worried, but the finished product has been an absolute joy to play thus far. Playing a wizard as I always do on my first play through.

I never judge any game on beta, final build and especially after patches is always different.

Same goes for reviews, nine times out of ten I disagree with review sites, only one way to judge any game and that is to play the final version yourself.

Fantastic game! Fantastic!

It brings everything that made BG/IWD so good, apply some new graphics but keep it on the "old school" side of the spectrum.

I started a Human Paladin finally...I always tend to start a RPG with a diplomatic character so I can unlock some more new dialogues and enjoy the story.

Brings back good memories.

Excellent so far !

One thing....I had to spend a little time remapping the controls . Especially something easier to select all chars. Hitting alt for stealth is very odd at first but getting used To it.

also, number keys are not working for me for abilities nor have I found a quick button for switching weapon sets. Is this a bug or have I missed something stupid?

Mechanics is what's used to open locks. Just clarifying for you

Well...given who the developers are...lol

Number keys are for selecting your party members, the function keys (F1, F2, etc...) are for mapping a skill for your party members. Hover over the skill and press one of the F keys to map it to that key for that character. So if I want to use the first skill of my first character I'd hit 1>F1

I've to disagree,I played all the BG series about six times right through, guess what never touched MP,infact with RPGs like BG series MP is not important at all,you want MP try the many MMORPGs out there or online FPS shooters.

I personally feel BG series was a great SINGLE player game.

Mind you I am NOT talking about yer "typical multiplayer" or FPS here, but playing BG (or Borderlands ...) in LAN with roomate/GF/wife is absolutely awesome. I just think those types of games (RPG party!!) are perfect for this and a lack of MP/co-op I think a big negative...

I haven't put much time in yet so forgive me if this question has an obvious answer, but is there a way to set hot keys for each character's abilities? I presume there must be but I haven't stumbled across it.

I would not say a big negative, plenty of people enjoying this game right now as a very good single player RPG.

You also have to remember not everything is going to be multi-play or single player only and developers know what they are designing the game for,end of the day you have to accept that.

I would not rule out Pillars of Eternity just because it has no MP,that is really making a very bad decision in my books.

I'm about ten hours in, with a full party of level 2 and 3 characters.

What I like :

- you can create companions at an inn, instead of only having the choice of premade ones
- the disengage mechanic makes battle more tactical; you just can't run by someone, you might get 'stuck' fighting them.
- Loot all bodies in a small area at once
- graphics are nice
- it's not D&D, but similar with new things
- varied mobs so far, with some being able to teleport to your back row, so different tactics are needed
- no poison; it's 'sickness' and wears off pretty quickly
- Stash you can use anywhere
- crafting you can do anywhere, and use things from the stash without removing them

What I'm not sure of :

- Endurance is king. 99% of the time my characters are knocked out instead of killed; having nearly full health, but no endurance. Just feels strange.
- No XP for killing mobs, only quest rewards
- no arrows/bolts
- there don't seem to be any healing spells, only Endurance spells. The only way to regain health is to sleep, and you can only sleep with 'camping supplies' which you are limited to 4 to carry
- You can use any weapon on any character, and 2H weapons are by far the best. My Rogue backstabs and fights with a 2H Halberd. With a dagger he may hit for 20 on a backstab and 1-5 while attacking, with a Halberd he can backstab for 40+ and hits regularly for 15+.

What I don't like :

- Stealth is party-based. You can't keep your Rogue in stealth for a backstab if another character comes out of stealth. Terrible mechanic.

Overall really enjoying it.

Lots of comments on mechanics, characters, graphics, and rules.

But what about story?

How's the story stack up?

I'm really intrigued by this game, but to me the story makes or breaks an RPG.

Considering it only released yesterday, it's kinda hard to determine how good the story is.

Looking back on the whole journey starting from the Kickstarter unveiling, it is awesome to know that we the fans helped make this game become a reality. Screw the big publishers, we don't need 'em!

This game will consume MANY hour of my life. I am a couple of hours in and loving it. I needed something like this to fill my time while waiting on Witcher 3.

Fair point. But some of you have multiple hours in already. That should be enough to get a feel as to whether or not story will play a strong role in the game or is just a "cover" to wrap game mechanics within.
