I've been running into some issues lately on my htpc and desktop which I think are both related to ping. I have a 50 Mbps down through Cox. Lately while streaming netflix in the living room htpc there has been quite a bit buffering and even downgrade in video quality (almost begins to look 480 quality), and this is with streaming already set at med quality to ensure we don't use up too much bandwidth.
The new issue started over the weekend with my desktop while playing BF4, I noticed the server I usually ping at mid 30s was spiking to 999. I don't usually have ping issues so solving them is new to me. I wasn't sure if it was my pc so I did a system restore to before the weekend and that didn't fix it. A google search had me do a tracert (couldn't get the command to save to a txt file for some reason, window would just force close).
I did a trace to the game server and to dslreports site, both times watching the info on the screen before the window closed. The first few hops the ping was low and it seemed to go through Cox Rhode Island servers. After that the ping seemed to skyrocket making the rest of the hops and I did notice a comcast address (not sure if it means they have anything to do with it). I did reboot my modem and it seemed to fix it to play a couple rounds with low ping last night, but am not sure if it's a perm fix, means it reset info from Cox for packet routing, or if maybe my modem is dying and needs to be replaced in the future.
Modem: Motorola SB6121 (docsis 3.0 purchased myself off Amazon)
