Ping problem with home network.

I have the following problem: I have 2 computers, when I ping the second computer it shows "request timed out"
I still can view and copy files on the second PC.

I have installed TCP/IP , IPX/SPX on both PCs and ofcourse File Sharing...

The subnet on both PCs is set to 255.255.255.0
And the IP's are : 169.254.0.1 and 0.2

The only difference I found when checking is that on the first PC(Win Me) computer IP Routing is Enabled but on the other one(Win 98SE) "is not".
Could this be the problem?
If yes , tell me how to fix it.

Technically, you shouldn't need IPX/SPX. That's a Novell Netware protocol (unless you have a sneeky Novell server... ).

Are these IPs assigned by an ISP (I'm curious about the "169&quot.

Neither should need IP routing for what you're doing. That would make the machine a router. Try turning that off.

What is the Gateway set to for each box?

the 169.254.x.x IP addresses are the addresses that windows 2000 defaults to when it cannot find a DHCP server. I am unsure if windows 2000 will actually use these IP addresses; i.e. if it will pass traffic over them, or if they are just placeholders.

Consider using 10.0.0.1/2 or 192.168.0.1/2 ...

If you go with randal's advice be sure to change your Subnet Mask accordingly: 255.0.0.0 and 255.255.0.0 respectively.
