OEM means you just get the actual hardware in a brown box. No fancy retail boxes, or anything like that. Usually no software or manuals/bonus programs.

Alright, before I go and do something stupid, can someone just comment on dvd-drive setups. Do you need sometype of decoder card with all dvd-drives? How about any other additional hardware?

In order to view DVD movies, you either need a hardware or software DVD decoder. Since you apparently don't have a hardware decoder (like the Hollywood+), go out to BestBuy and grab SoftDVD Max and a free DVD movie for $25 (in this week's ad). If your computer is over 450MHz or so with a decent video card, you shouldn't have any trouble watching movies.

If you want DVD output to your TV, you'll need that [TV Out] either on your video card or you'll need to invest in a hardware decoder.

It depends on the speed of your computer. If your computer is not fast enough you will need a decoder card. Otherwise you might get some lag or studdering of the frames in the movies. My brother has a celeron 500mhz cpu and 64 megs of ram. He gets a small amount of stuttering but not much at all. He is happy with it.

Well, I've got a Duron@750 w/384mb of memory, so judging by what you guys have said, all I really need is the drive to watch movies on my PC, and some software to decode. I guess now I will look into buying this drive. Thanx guys!

You shouldn't have any problem if you have a decent Video card. I used a 450 celeron and a tnt2 based video card. No studdering or frames dropped that I could tell. When I switched to a 966 P3 with an onboard Video card in the Asus CUSL2 MB, I noticed dropped frames occasionally at higher resolutions. I think almost any decent Video card in a system with at least a 400 celeron will do just fine for software decoding in Windows. While we're on this topic of software decorders...anyone have suggestions on which to use and were to get it? I was using Zoran until I got rid of the TNT2 card. The card I am using now is an Elsa Erazor with a geforce 256 chip in it. I can't get Zoran to work with it. It keeps crashing during installion.

I called CompuPlus and they told me that "White Box" means that the box is not a nice box. But it is the Original from Pioneer and DOES have a guarantee from Pioneer vs. the Access Micro one which does not have a guarantee (tell me if I'm wrong).
Murphy thanks for your answer!
BTW, what does the acronym of OEM stand for?

non sense,
as long as the drive is made by pioneer,
and has the pioneer label on it, they will
honor the warrenty...oem or not...
also...white box=oem=access micro's drive

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer.

This describes parts sold to manufacturers. In this case, hard drives, etc sold to computer manufacturers such as Dell, Gateway, and smaller shops. Does not include the usual stuff shipped sold to end users, like cables, manuals, perhaps even driver disks.

I love my Pioneer 104s....it's great. I bought mine right before the prices skyrocketed last year, for $100 including shipping. I flashed the BIOS and that fixed a couple of little annoyances but not problems.

I also don't like ordering from CompuPlus. Often times they close shop and you don't know until you wonder where the stuff is that you ordered a week ago, then you call to find out that they're closed b/c it's the last week of the year or something.
