I like Pioneer receivers - and although the wattage is probably over-rated (like it always is), still looks like a nice setup for <$200.

Quick note: this receiver does not have SVIDEO. The pic does not show the inputs/output and the review confirms it.

I'm looking at my old Pro-Logic unit, thinking it's time to upgrade and wondering why I want S-Video on my receiver. Don't I only care about AUDIO inputs? Can someone clue me in? Much appreciated.

s video im not sure.. but some receivers act as a main receiver for both audio and video sources. So you have one unit to control them. but with current HD tvs with hdmi dvi and at least compononent input, s-video is quite useless imho.

There are some cases where you'd want to run all your video sources through your receiver.

For my setup for example, I have a projector with only one input of each type. I run a long line from the receiver to the projector with component and let the receiver take each source and upconvert it to component to send to the projector.

In other cases, it's sometimes nice to just have to hit a single button and have the receiver select the audio and video source at the same time (instead of saying for example set the audio to DVD with the receiver remote and then using the TV remote to component input 1 or whatever the case may be).

So if you don't mind picking up another controller and pressing one button, then it doesn't matter much.

Surround Power 660 Watts Total System Power - 110 watts x 6 (1 kHz 1.0% THD @ 8 Ohms)
Stereo Power 220 Watts Total System Power - 110 watts x 2 (20 Hz - 20kHz .7 % THD @ 8 Ohm)

Ouch and ouch. Crappy THD, but I guess on par with most receivers for less than $200 or so. I just can't buy anything with >.1% THD at full spectrum. Notice in surround they only measure THD @ 1kHz.

The specs are probably all BS anyway. You might want to go in and try to get a demo of it to see what you think of it.

Confused by rear photo's.
Shows 3 sets of L/R speaker outputs + center.
Looks like Front L/R, Rear L/R, Surround L/R, + Center.
That is 7 channels, and no sub?
With that setup, looks like designed for using a pair of side speakers (Surround L/R).
Could it be photo is of a 7.1 system, and bass/sub output is located outside speaker output area?

6.1 I've owned had Front L/R, Rear (surround) L/R, Front Center, "Rear Center", and Sub.
7.1 had Front L/R, Rear (surround) L/R, Side L/R, Front Center, and Sub.
8.1 had Front L/R, Rear (surround) L/R, Side L/R, Front Center, Rear Center, and Sub.

I just checked the Pioneer manual online. This is a 7.1 receiver.

The sub output you can see to the left (it's not powered, it's the RCA output right next to the yellow video connections).

Circuit City lists the receiver as 6.1 also
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pioneer-...atOid/-12949/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
But their pictures of it look like it has 7.1 connections as well.

See my sig

It is 7.1 but has little use for that. DTS and NEO:6 are both mixed to six channels. The manual shows you how to hook up the speakers, it seems to be primarily a 6.1 speaker with 7.1 abilities if you absolutely need them, but then you will need to use DD Pro Logic 2x decoding, if I understand it correctly.

It sounds awesome by the way, which is the most important thing for me. I picked up mine for $120 on BF though

Nat

*Lack of S-video was a minor thing for me.
