2x DVD is equivalent to 18x CD-R (1x CD is 150kB/s). You can start considering anytime

I am considering a DVD-R just because when CD-RW came out in 1997 [to consumers] I took a gamble with it and it payed off big time. Stil not sure about it though; I was stuck with a 2x CDRW for the longest time. Even though 1x for dvd is ~1MB and 1x for CD is ~150KB.

Pioneer's drive doesn't support multi-session recording, i.e. you have to finalize each burn, which might be a waste of space if you can't fill 4.7gigs...

I just wish the media wasn't so darn expensive. At $15 per DVD-R, it's really only good for making your own home movies that will play on your (newer) DVD player. And that would be one expensive coaster!

Actually the price is more like $10 for the Apple DVD-R's.
I'm more concerned about the lack of multi-session on this drive :-(
