i got the nec 3500a one. it's nice.
you should look at BenQ 1620 too. they look pretty nice when using DVD+R.

so what times do you guys get with these?

when I burn an 8X DVD+R at 12X, it takes about 6:57. But the buffer always dips down to 0% about half way through, then restarts and burns a bit quicker. Anyone else having this happen?

This is normal. From what I have been reading, even when you burn at 12X or 16X, it doesn't burn at that speed through the whole disc. I have read that it only ramps up to 12x speed after the 4gig mark on a single layer disk. What you are seeing it entirely normal and I have witnessed it myself. FYI I am using BETA 4 of >Nil's hacked firmware, using 8X Ritech DVD+R media.

Well finally bit and ordered one, anyone know what the max burn speed is for 4x Ritek G02 media?

without modified bios (I didn't try) max was 4x for my tries.

Lot's of people will pay $10 for DL media because it is an ideal way to make your own custom DVDs of home movies, or weddings, or anything else you might want to create. If you are just making copies of DVDs, I agree, buying the legitimate DVD is the way to go. But if you are making your own DVDs, the quality you can get with large projects and DL disks will be worth the extra expense.
