I found one at a local BB that was brand new for 257 and an open box one for 200(not missing anything) about 15 miles away from me.
Which one do you guys think I should go for? I'd probably get the additional warranty regardless.
Another question for the guys that bought the open box item. Did they also let you get the free KLH speakers?

I'm thinking about picking this receiver up, but want to know what speakers I should get to compliment this system (obviously, bang for the buck ratio should be high ). Are the free KLH speakers (3-piece) any good? I assume these speakers would be the two rear satellites and center channel for our setups. Can they handle the job when paired up with good front speakers and a subwoofer, or is a full surround package a better option?

Dolby Prologic II can output any stereo signal to 5.1. It's good for listening to CDs. Kinda makes me feel like I'm not wasting my 5.1 setup when I'm listening to CDs.

Stupid registration... I'm curious about one statistic on this receiver; the manual lists it as having 1.0% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). My few-year-old budget Yamaha states that it has 0.04% (both at 8ohm, 1kHz). 0.04 vs. 0.1 I would understand, but 1.0... Does anyone else find that odd?

yes, u get the klh speaker set, and yes, it is a rear and center set.
they are pretty crappy, using them as my only speakers while i wait for my psbs from the other hot deal to arrive - damn you hot deals!

and btw, i have cranked this thing (albeit w/ the klh speakers) and haven't gotten any distortion - and 1.0% would definitely be audible, somehow i think its a typo - not to mention the fact that 1.0% thd would be deathly for an amp to generate - well deadly for the speakers, and i know pioneer wouldn't have done that, that would just be stupid

farbio,

Can you give me a quick help on setting this up, as you already have done it. I also got VSX-D850S and KLH Speakers. I tried connecting speakers to Receivers & CD Player ( 5 Disc - Sony ), but no luck on getting audio on Speakers.

Thanks
akshata

Press the (Dolby Digital)/DTS button on the remote until the display on the receiver indicates PROLOGIC. Play a multi-channel source and you should hear audio from all speakers.

Yes, "open box" items still qualify for the free speakers. Any thoughts on whether the $34.99 extended warranty is worth it?

I just got the last one, open box from the Austin BB @183 & 360. I did not get manual, but printed it from the web site.
I got it for $209, but the guy said open box was not eligable for the free speakers. I looked at the add when I got back to work
and could not find a disclaimer on the web hosted weekly add section (bottom of page www.bestbuy.com).
Do you guys think I could get these speakers if I went back and through a mild stink?

Thanks for the heads up on this eugovector; I just bought a Pioneer 53" 16:9 HDTV and needed to get a tuner, but was short on cash after the TV purchase.

Later,
Dale

Argh! Open Boxes qualify for the free speakers?!! When I bought my receiver, they had the free speaker promotion a week later, and they wouldn't let me get the free speakers when I brought the receipt back in... bastards!

I would try it if I were you. And if it doesn't work, go back at a different time and try your luck with different employees/managers.

Well, I opted against the extened service plan. Was that wise? Ask me in four years, I guess.

But how that came about was slightly more humorous. This awkward adolescent kid was working the checkout, and he offered me the plan after he rang up the item. I was debating it with myself, so he gave me his $0.02. I'm not sure if he was trying to persuade me for it or against it. But he said that the moving part most likely to break would be the "little laser thing." I'm pretty sure he thought I was buying a CD player!

I snatched the last one at $295 today (with the 3 piece speaker set). It's strange it didn't ring up at $257.50. What can i do to get the adjustment? I don't think going back to the same store with the same recepit would work though... or would it?

I have to get the $40 back!!! If anyone has bought it for $257.50, please email me a scan of their receipt. Thanks in advance!

Anyway, it was hilarious when that lady CSR helped me get that 3 piece speakers. When she got it off the top shelf and handed them to me, she said, "to connect these speakers, you need an optical cable. You might want to take a look at some of them." hahaha... I didn't want to say anything and just smiled back and said "it's okay, i've got some at home".

Dale,
I would definitely raise some crap about that. The ad clearly say
"Free 3-Piece Speaker Set KLH HT-9930 instantly, with purchase of ANY Dolby Digital receiver"
There are no disclaimers saying that it is for receivers that are NIB and the 850 is definitely a DD receiver.

UPDATE:

Well, after reading the manual I found out that I was given the wrong remote (no LCD). So I went back to BB and made them give me the right remote, which they had paired up to the wrong display receiver.

While there, I threw a mild fit about being ripped off about the speakers and walked out with those too.
Thanks all, I hope this sounds good when I get it all hooked up.

PS. I got the warranty. If I understand it correctly, BB will replace the unit with one of equal or better performance in the situation where the damaged unit cannot be repaired. Is this correct? If so, what is to keep people from discreetly ruining their receiver right before warranty expiration in order to get a brand new unit, which would probably be better? Surely they don't just give you credit of the amount you paid for the unit towards a new unit. It would be very unlikely I could replace this unit with a comparable unit for $209.

Any one know how the warranty is executed?

Thanks
Dale

Nice...if people want this unit just call BB. I just contacted two in my area and they both have 4 in stock.
