Well, 5.1 is meant for movies, and only impt in action movies where you have planes, cars, rockets, missiles, bullets coming right towards you and "exits" through the back. Listening to music CDs using "forced" 5.1 just doesn't make sense. Maybe for concert CDs where you can replicate some echo effect so it seems that you're listening in a real stadium, but even that does not really require any kind of Dolby Prologic, just constant "echo-ing" would do. And for the most part, listenening to regular CDs other than normal stereo mode just adds noise to the sound (passing thru complicated DSP circuits).

For true audiophiles, they would avoid listening to CDs on "receivers", even if they turned off all the DSP effects! It's just not as clean. They prefer to have a pure stereo amp that doesn't have any bells and whistles (and with just front L/R speakers) and a whole separate 5.1 system for movies.

With so much hot deals going on, all i need is more room to have the above "2 system" entertainment setup! (and of course more $$$)

After calling four BB stores, I finally found one that had the 850 receiver new in box. It was $266 and I got the free speakers. I debated on getting the 4 year service plan since it was only $35. I guess I have 30 days to decide if I want it so that'll just depend on how much this the receiver impresses me once I get it all hooked up. Thanks for the heads up on the deal! I love AT but I just keep spending more $$$! I mean c'mon, how can you pass up such a great deal.

If so, what is to keep people from discreetly ruining their receiver right before warranty expiration in order to get a brand new unit, which would probably be better? Surely they don't just give you credit of the amount you paid for the unit towards a new unit. It would be very unlikely I could replace this unit with a comparable unit for $209.

Any one know how the warranty is executed?
Actually, I believe it does work the way your afraid of. I'm pretty sure the sales guy told me I would get the original purchase price in credit to get another receiver if mine ever failed... so I opted against the plan. But you should double-check with your store.

5.1 is meant for anything recorded in that format. Plenty of concert DVDs recorded in 5.1 and, oh, dont forget. XBOX games!!!!!
DLPII is good for television broadcasts that are not in 5.1 yet. Plenty of movies on HBO, etc are still broadcast in analog stereo and DLPII is a better format to hear them in then regular DLP.
I know of what I speak, I have had the VSX-D811s for a couple of months now.
LUV IT!!!!

I went to Best Buy Pinole CA, it was listed at 350, I bought an open box at 280, when I got home saw on the receipt that they rang it up at 257 but gave it to me at 280, so I went back asking them to give it to me at 257. Idiot manager wouldn't do it, so I returned it. Funny part is they didn't have the 3 free speakers so they gave me a rain check...which I still have. 3 free speakers I guess!

Anyways, kansai999 if you could plz .email me the receipt, I'd appreciate it greatly.

I'll check out a few more in my area and see if I can get another one.

Yep, was tagged at $257 in Minneapolis plus the free speakers!!

For those of you not opting for the $39 four rear replacement warranty, just remember that the learning remote is worth $120 if you have to replace it.

Still $257 with free speakers in Coralville.

But mostly I just posted to say that I'm so proud of myself. I've never started a thread that has gone on this long.

Just got back from Timonium, MD store. They have 1 unit left in a box for $257 but were out of the free speakers. Said I could bring receipt back later to get speakers. I was very tempted to get unit, but am short on cash right now. They also have one display unit, but the remote has walked.

Please email one to me. I want to head over tonight. Nobody is mentioning if they are honoring the scans....are they? My store still has it for $379 in the computer. Is it possible that it would ring up for less or am I ignorant of their inventory/POS system?

I bought mine at $295 and went back today with the scan, but the @ssholic manager said that they can't pricematch (price adjust for my case) with another BB that's in another state. WTF?

I'll try again later. Anyway, i have located another BB (60 miles away) that has the price at $257.90. Just call them up and ask for customer service, then ask them to check the price on the item # 4135199.

Just got the last one at Ray Rd & I-10 in PHX for $257.50 + tax and free speakers.
Fiesta location is out, don't know about other location.

Should be a good upgrade from VSX-D509S. Is there any chance for me to PM it down to $210 ?

This is what I did:

I called the BB store and checked if they had the stock. No, but they did have some in another BB 1/2 hour to where I lived, went there and the price was $329. I decided not to get it.

I looked at the web site and began calling other best buy store. I found there were 5 in a store 1.5 hour from where I lived.
So I just decided to go to the BB near me and let them order it for me. I told the sales that I called the other BB and they were willing to send it to this BB store. So he called the GM and the GM told him that he could do that. When he was looking at the computer, I saw that they were many stores still have this, but the price was varied ($257 to $339).

So I got it for $257.50 with free speaker. I will have the receiver next week though. Better than having to drive for 3 hours.

Are you speaking from experience here? or did you find this policy given somewhere?

There are no disclaimers saying that it is for receivers that are NIB and the 850 is definitely a DD receiver.
I purchased mine at the "open box" price and received the free speakers.
