what kind of headphones or speakers would you have? without a decent sound setup trying to find the difference between high bitrate audio is going to be difficult

My stuff's all low end, but that's all that matters to me. It'll always be low end, so if it sounds good on my equipment, that's good enough. I could hear the difference on my low end setup with bagpipes, and that's probably a good test for any codec. There's a lot of complex upper harmonics that are in the cut range for compression, so deficiencies will show up there without a lot of other sounds going on to mask the errors.

Well if your headphones or speakers aren't good enough you might not be hearing everything (even with high bit rate)

But hey, as long as it's good enough for you, go for it.

personally i find the differences between a lossy rip and a loseless one most evident in the bass and very high end and i don't need headphones to hear it.

A very good track for demonstrating some of this is Daft Punk - Overture off the Tron Legacy soundtrack
the first 90 seconds or so are subtly and just the orchestra playing, if you have the equipment you can hear the musicians turning the pages of their music and taking breaths. this is lost on mp3s. hell even directly off the CD some very expensive speakers cant even reproduce it

Yeah, I sorta notice this too.

Lots of lossy compression works by setting ceilings on frequencies. So instead of 20hz, you get 18hz. It's dog-ear stuff, but some people do notice it.

Haha, I am listening to my Daft punk FLAC right now oddly enough

Digital love right now though.

My early rips were noticeably inferior to the CD, but I couldn't even guess what I ripped them at.

Found one of my old tracks that I remember bothering me. It's 192kbs mp3. I'd like to try it at 256kbs ogg, and 320kbs mp3. Hooking up the optical drives is a PITA though...

The music industry fucked up dvd-audio by releasing substandard albums and Sony had to push its bullshit DSD. I was willing to buy dvd-audios. I have 50+ of them. But the fuckers just can't get their shit straight so the format died.

Is that my fault?
