Oscars are about the same as piranha. They'll eat just about anything, live about 20 or so years and get rather large (My uncles live to be 19 and was about a foot and a half long). They come in as many if not more colors than piranha and are legal everywhere that I know of. Jack Dempseys are nice fish too, named after the late boxer. Some say they are meaner than piranha and oscars both. I don't know about that but the ones I've had certainly didn't like me or anything else in their tank so I stayed out of it. They're very pretty though. Both oscars and jack dempseys are of the cichlid family. They are easy to maintain and pretty hardy little fish.

I have an Oscar that's about 10 years old. Honestly I don't know how he's lived that long because I hardly have time to take care of his tank since I had kids. Plus it's a smallish (55 gal) tank, so he's not that big - probably a foot or so. I've also had African cichlids. I've never been able to keep them alive too long because they're less hardy than Oscars, so I don't know if they get as big, but they are far more aggressive than the North/South American cichlids.

Jack Dempsey's are prettier than Oscars, and I had one that lived several years but died in a tragic moving accident. They seem more aggressive than Oscars. The links you provided don't do them justice - they have nice blue and red colors that go nicely with their spots.

Don't do a mouse, it is so sick. My friend had 5 piranhas and he fed them a mouse and they eat it arse first. All there was left was the head and a sack of skin.

LifeStealer - Jack Dempsey's are very mean fish, good call on that one. I would like to add that arrowannas are really cools as well.

Lastly, my friend also had a Plecostomus in his piranaha tank and they never touched it. In fact he had to leave for a week and when he came back there was one less piranaha and the Plecostomus was still there.

Get an Electric Fish (Electric Ray, Electric Eel, or Electric Catfish). Legal in every state.

my buddy has a tank of piranhas, we put in a live mouse and it seemed like the fish weren't that hungry, all the mouse would do was run/swim on top of the water.

it eventually got out of the tank and ran away, would love to see that happen though.

Jeepers the the second the koi was openned up it was over. I wonder if they accidentally bite each other cause they go in for the kill so quickly.
