plenty of harder fouls - yes, over the course of the season....but still an intentionally hard foul by Artest, for no reason other than to be Artest...

consider the situation though...up by 15, 45 seconds left

NeoV,

You're right bud. It was unnecesarily hard and it's par for the course for Artest. Ben Wallace's reaction likewise to me was a guy who's pissed off at getting waxed by a divisioin rival AND going through a lot of persona duress. Personally, he probably could've just scowled...dropped a few F-bombs for the hard foul and let it slide but once again, it's just me sitting here saying this is what "I" would do. I have no idea the sh1t-talking that probably went on all game and what not. You know, the junk that goes on in every court. Regardless, Wallace's reaction at most was a small fine by the league as is typical of Stu Jackson knee-jerk reactionary-ism and a classic case of move on and forget about it . Those two incidents are neither here nor there in my opinion. The bottom line is this: alcohol+heated emotions = bad, all bad. It doesn't matter the place. That's just a recipe for disaster. Throw in a flying cup of brew and there you have it folks.

Not to mention, Artest didn't go for the ball. If you're going to foul hard, at least pretend to go after the ball. Either way, Artest was just being Artest and Wallace overreacted. (The first scuffle that is.)

actually the detroit players didn't do anything after ben wallace got fouled.

as for the detroit fans... what makes you think they're the only ones that would react like that?

Read my comment on Vernon Maxwell's incident in this thread...if you follow the NBA, you'll remember what happened. Another player, another city, another charge into the stands, another punch thrown...no riot ensued.

It was not a flagrant foul but was not a "clean" foul because of the contact to the neck and head region.
There was no need for this. Indy had the game locked up, Artest was just looking for a fight or something to piss of Wallace/Pistons.

Obviously you are a pistons fan, but it was a typical hard foul that happens in every game, nothing less, nothing more. Ben Wallace wayyyy over-reacted by push into Artests face.

Artest wasn't looking for a fight, if he was, he wouldnt be chilling on the scorer's table.

If I was Artest and some fan threw beer onto my face, on top of being pushed by Ben Wallace earlier, I woulda knocked that motherfvcking fan out too. Too bad, it appears the fan that got owned wast the fan that threw the beer.

In summary, Ben wallace overreacted, Artest hit the wrong guy, Oneal and Jackson are the real b!tches cuz they didnt have to get involved(although that sliding punch was the best ever). and things coulda cooled down if the dumbass fans didnt start throwing sh!t at the players.

Finally a full length replay. So sad.

Why is this sad? Go to ATP&N if you want tragedy. This is funny, hilarious, all that good stuff. A few people got taken out were "injured' and these lucky bastards will break the bank.

i'm glad it was finally mentioned a few times.

Artest assaulted someone who he thought threw a beer at him. The man turned out to be a bystander. Artest assaulted an innocent bystander and should be severely punished.

people who are defending Artest obviously have no idea what they are talking about, and are not basketball fans. Artest has a track record of brawls and flagarant fouls. Artest took matters into his own hands and beat up an innocent bystander. how is that justified?

trust me, with Artest's track record, David Stern is going to fine and suspend him to an unprecidented amount. and he deserves it.

Artest definitely went after the wrong guy, there's no denying that. I think he got hit by a cup when he was laying down, looked up, saw that guy laughing and pointing, and rushed that guy thinking he threw it. Whoops.

i was at the game, and for such a boring game, the ending sure was exciting. few stupid fans got out of hand, and cooler head would've prevailed, but when you throw in artest to the equation, you know that's not gonna happen. yes i am a stones fan but don't let that discredit me.

granted, if i got hit w/ a beer, i'd be pissed too. but would i go in a mad rush, choke hold someone demaning to know if he threw the beer? (and according ot the interview of the local radio station, that's exactly what artest did.) then there's the other idiot that was by that guy, the one that blasted artest w/ another cup of beer, prompting s. jackson to fly in to deck the guy. btw, i think the original offender was the guy that was pulling artest off, only to sucker punch him from behind. yes fan was at fault for throwing the beer, but artest also could've just shrugged it off and just walked into the locker room. instead he made the choice to go after someone in the general direction. so everyone involved is at fault.

here's my thought: a player has no right going into the stands. and the fans reacted the way they did because they saw one or few of the other fans being attacked. and they saw, one, then two, then more people throwing whatever they had at the opposing players. it's a mob mentality it'd happen anywhere given the situation. and add artest to the mix, and you know it's only gonna get worse.

as for the two "poor" idiots on the floor that got decked, esp by j o'neal's sliding right hook, had no business being there in the first place. altho they'd prolly sue and get some compensation for their stupidity. (good ole usa..) everyone involved lost their cool and just went off. about the only person that didnt' do anything was tayshawn prince, who was the ONLY player to remain on the bench during hte brawl.

i can't wait for the x-mas game, and i can't wait to goto the march home game vs indy. not to mention the playoffs. yes it gave another black eye for the city of detroit, yes we are the STD capital of NA. blah blah.. just add tonight to the growing list. and as bad as tonight's incident was, i was glad i was there to witness the mayhem first hand, crazy.. and at least we didn't throw batteries like some other disgruntled fans.

You say a player has NO right to go in the stands? What if say a chair was thrown on the court for argument's sake? Let's get one thing straight...just because he's an athlete doesn't mean he forfeit's his right to be a man. In this instance I think it's definitely overreaction...from my perspective as far as what Ron Artest did but that's just me speaking from this seat. That said...there are definitely instances where I don't give a flying FVCK if I was a paid athlete, all bet's are off and head's are rolling (like in the flying chair example).

Jombo, good post.

I agree with most of what you say with the possible exception of the comments on the two "poor" idiots.

They may very well have been on the floor because they were displaced by the roving mob of entangled brawlers and I don't think the first guy was going to hit Artest and the and the second definitely wasn't a threat to O'Neal.

As a UK fan it was good to see Tayshaun is still as calm and collected as he ever was.

i feel sorry for artest. That stupid stupid fan who threw the beer should be jailed.

Some pistons fans are pretty stupid. Ya ya artest should've kept his cool, BUT WHO WON'T DO THAT? Wallace nabs you in the face for a not-so-hard foul, and artest tries to keep his cool, and that phokking retard fan throws beer at him. SMART. Artest did what any human would have done. if he gets suspended for more ten games, then i'm not watching NBA anymore.

artest and oneal should be given MINIMUM punishment. Ben wallace should be given a higher punishment. they don't deserve more than 10 games punishment w/ minimal fines.

and yes, i agree w/ jombo somewhat. BUT i agree w/ kevinH even more. that stupid fan got what he deserved, and he got what was coming to him.
