Dogs bark occasionally, its part of being a dog..

sheesh.

He said it doesnt happen often, but it does happen. Its a fact of life. It is UNREASONABLE to think that this dog or any dog for that matter would never bark. His neighbor probably gripes about people who honk their horn on the street or talk too loudly.

I work at home and if a dog barked every single day for any amount of time beyond shrugging it off, I'd go nuts too. *Something* has to be done about it, regardless of the reason it barks. And I'm a dog-lover... but barking gets irritating.

I guess you just need to be more sensitive in that you see how it is staying at home an entire day with him barking at the same rate. Sure it's easy to blame the old guy if you don't experience it first hand. You being at work is not his problem.

I've heard of worse neighbors who get annoyed at others' cats roaming around. They leave out antifreeze as water... it's better that he "warned" you.

A-freaking-men.

People who allow their dogs to disturb their neighbors peace are no better than the morons who talk on cell phones in movies. If you can't control your dog you shouldn't have a dog. If this has been happening long enougn for you to have used and stopped using a shock collar, your neighbor has shown remarkable patience. You're an idiot, the problem is entirely your fault and it's your responsibility to fix it.

you used a shock collar on your dog? that's pretty cruel man.

my dog used to bark when he heard people outside, near the door. i pwn'd him though because i would knock on the door or ring the door bell, he'd bark, i'd open the door and yell at him. now he pwns me though. he'll sniff the door first to see who it is, then bark.

Judging by your user name, you don't have much tolerance. I think if you want complete silence and a peaceful, noise-free environment around your home, you should buy some acreage where you can get that. You sould not be living in a neighborhood where your house is 15 feet from your neighbors.

Sorry dude, get rid of the dog before they poison it. A dog that barks all day long should be delt with.

I LOVE dogs, but that would annoy the HELL out of me too.

Thankfully, my dogs seldom barks.

As a LAST resort (though I wouldn't suggest it other wise) you COULD have the vocal cords cut...

Petsmart has an 8 week training program I am going to take my dog to. Hopefully there will be something there that will help this issue. I realize a dog's incessant barking is annoying, however, I dont think it is reasonable to suggest that a dog should never bark. My other dog is not a barker, he digs. Each dog has its own personality. I suppose everyone will have a diff opinion based on how it affects THEM. I hope the training works as I cant seem to find anything other than a shock collar that will deter barking while Im at work.

For a second I read the title of this thread as "PETA neighbor hates my dog."

I think I will try and record my dog to see if he actually does bark as much as my neighbor claims. Maybe I'll also catch my neighbor harassing my dog (might explain some of the barking)

agreed. I think people are jumping to conclusions about how much the dog barks, but who knows. I don't have a problem if the dog barks very sparingly. If it's non-stop for 15 minutes + then i have a problem.

exactly why we have cats....dogs are a major pain in the rump and require alot of attention...if you cannot be there to take care of your dog then you really shouldn't have one.

Sorry, your dog should not be barking continuously no matter what time it is. It may seem reasonable to you, since you aren't home to hear it. But if you had to live next door, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like it either.

Your neighbor may be a PITA and a grouch, but that doesn't relieve you of the responsibility of not having your dog barking all the time.

<-- was in the same boat as your neighbor once

Well, you ought not to judge people by their usernames.

Anyway, I am jumping to a conclusion - that your dog is barking more than you think. When I had the issue with my old neighbor, that was part of it. I live on a street that has a good bit of traffic, so I don't expect a completely noise-free environment. But that doesn't mean I need to put up with woof, woof, woof <5 second delay> woof, woof <5 second delay> woof, woof, woof for hours.

My neighbor wasn't home during the day, he put the dog in the yard and the dog barked for no reason, only stopping due to exhaustion I think.

Hey, if the dog only barked for a minute when it saw a squirrel, that's different and I would be on your side. It's just that from my own experience, the dog owner doesn't think it's as bad as it really is.

no. dont pay any attention to those who say if you cant keep your dog quiet you dont deserve to own a dog. thats like saying if you cant keep a baby from crying, you dont deserve to have a baby. dogs bark. thats what they do. but know that if a dog's barking 50%+ of the time you are gone...then thats not normal and is a problem. Try videotaping you dog to see how often it barks. and maybe seeing if your neighbor is doing something to cause the dog to bark.

other than that, the petsmart training should help.

best of luck

PS. any more pics of your dog?

Aspen is mostly GS, I dont know what True is, they are both rescued from ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation?). So far they are awesome, we have had them for a little over a year. Aspen digs and true barks, but I guess thats what dogs do. Hopefully the training I want to enroll in will help.

I see your point, I do have a responsibilty to do as much as possible to be courteous to my neighbors (or at least I feel like I should) but I am frustrated because the problem mainly exists when we are away during the day. My other neighbor works (like us) and thus we have no beef.

You might want to spend a few bucks and consult an animal behavior specilist, your dog sounds like he's lonely and bored while you are away.
