Pits are fine dogs, but the capacity for them to severely injure/kill someone is high enough that they shouldn't be given to anyone who wants one. They should be licensed, like firearms. Potential owners should be given a test (proper feeding/training/shelter/health Q&A), and cities and municipalities should be free to ban them if the voters support such measures.
In all cases, the responsibility of the owner is paramount, as with any animal, it must be properly cared for. Even more tragic than the hundreds(?) of people injured by dogs each year are the hundreds of thousands of animals that are neglected and abused every day.
