I've been a Pirates fan since the early 60's when they couldn't win a single game all year...in fact, they were so bad that they even lost when playing against themselves. (practice games)

BUT, they've had a few good years...OK, 1 or 2 anyway...

When you call for tickets does the automated system have an option for the Suicide Prevention Hotline?

They do have great food at PNC I heard. It's on my list of parks to visit this summer.

Dude...I haven't seen them play at home since about 1963...

Why do you hate the Pirates so much? Did they manage to beat your favorite team?

(would probably have to be a bottom-tier little leage team, but your hatred has to be based on something personal)

I'm a Yankee fan, but I remember watching their '79 team and rooting for them, especially since I hated the Orioles. Madlock, Stargell, Parker, Foli were an impressive core group on offense. I remember Blyleven and Tekulve on the pitching side. Tekulve was especially memorable as he had that funky delivery, and kids were trying to pitch like him.

I usually catch a few pirates games a year. They have incredibly priced tickets.

The prob with the pirates is the owners. They realized that they can get rich by having a sucky team and sucking up all the profit sharing. They rare chance they get a good player, in a half a season they are guaranteed Yankees.

Personally, I like to pretend that they are a farm league with amazing facilities.

Luckily my base team is actually decent for a few years. Go Phils.

PNC Park is a gorgeous stadium. but they pirates do suck. The only times i go to see a game is for Fireworks nights. At least the Pittsburgh steelers and Penguins are at least good. It would suck to have all three of our sports teams consistently suck.

Yeah, and it's not hard to see the problem.

MLB Team Salaries

#1 NY Yankees $206M
#2 Boston Red Sox $163M
...

Well, I am a Yankees fan. but I don't really watch baseball unless it like the playoffs or championships. I'll go to the staudium for a game or two, but mostly because i'm with friends and its more to hang out with people than to really watch the game.

Uh, each major league team got 30 million dollars from the national television contract alone. Yes, 30 million before they opened their gates.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/season-preview/2010/269597.html

That's not counting the "luxury tax" salary revenue sharing. I can't find the 2009 stat, but if its like it was in previous years, figure 15 million for the Pirates.

So, the Pirates are taking in 45 million before the open the gates. And their team salary is 35 million? That's a 10 million dollar profit.

Is it any wonder that:

Guess what?:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/sports/baseball/13marlins.html

...The Boston Globe late last year in an e-mail message that “over a billion dollars has been paid to seven chronically uncompetitive teams, five of whom have had baseball’s highest operating profits.

Well, their front office guys will be gone soon due to non-performance, and they do have some young talent. It's been tough for many years but I am still a fan. Plus they have the best ballpark in the majors.

Wait, didn't they just rehire their GM and Manager? Wasn't that what the Pirogi was upset about?

I'd take a great team in an old football stadium over a craptacular team in the best ballpark.

Actually, I do miss that crazy atmosphere in a packed stadium. Those playoff Padres games at Qualcomm in the 90's were intense.

Is it the best? The Baltimore base stadium looks awefully nice.

Nice to see someone from the area.

Their stadium is fantastic.. i've only been to a few MLB games but it really is a great experience at PNC. Also nice that you can pretty much walk up any night and spend a max of $20 a ticket to get great seats too...
