Got that fan speed adjuster and plugged it into the power supply. Even when set to the minimum, it's a subtle difference in sound and I can't see the rpm's to estimate it. At full oad, there 's a HUGE difference in temp though...15+ celsius!

Still a pretty good deal when you see the prices of the 2.8ghz version!

BeBumbleBe,

I realized that I got exactly the same problem when I ran Prime95 a night before I left on my trip to Japan. My system did everything perfectly at 3.06Ghz at default voltage including 3dMark 2001, Mpeg video editing and so on without locking up or anything. But when I ran Prime95, I got an error. I did not have time to check how low I have to go down to eliminate the error. I will check when I get back.

Boots up to 3.1ghz but not stable in Prime95. Mo crashing like with previous CPUs but P95 just stops. Maybe some burning in will help.

It's mind-boggling to go from a 500mhz sytem to a 3ghz system!

My Kingston 2700 doesn't like going up too high though so I've set it to 2x.

I still have an exclamation mark next to the USB Controller. Were you able to get rid of that fxsts? Also there doesn't seem to be a connector for the power led on the board (the one in my case is a "3 hole" one)

Anyway thanks for leading me to this jewel of a chip!

Extra power plug?

BeBumbleBe,

Thanks for checking. The P4 definitely behaves differently than the old Deschutes that would crash big time in Prime95 when pushed too hard.
It's hard to get the P4 stable in Prime95 though. Last I tried 2.8ghz at pretty much defautl voltage seemed to work. I'll try a Tmpeg encoding at 3.06 to see what happens but I'm concerned that the Prim95 errors would creep up there too and produce problems with the video?

I think the issue is non cpu related....vcore boost should have made you stable and then when you continued to climb you would continue to bump vcore to gain stability....

My northwoods have always shown from the point in which I need to boost vcore over default I can usually get another 180-200mhz more up to 1.7v vcore...

The fact you hit the wall like that and from when that has happened in the past to me clearly tells me something else is limiting you...Be it mobo...Be it power supply issue...

That's quite possible especially since we're using the same mobo (Albatron). Not sure if I would call it hitting the wall though since only Prim95 generates errors, after a while and never crashes completely.

MOst other programs are very forgiving and are not checking to see if the info is absolutely correct...I have had divx encodings go flwless at a given speed prime95 can't get by 4-6 test and no problems. However I noticed in a coupl of those instances a higher number of artifacts and occasional colored pixels...so the slight errors may have shown themselves. I also don't think it taxes the cpu in the same way.

I agree don't use prime95 as sole test, but don't overlook its results...

wow nice oc..
i think you should increase the voltage to around 1.75v, and spend $20 to get a better heatsink, you can run it at 3.2-3.4GHz stable..

1.75v also will risk killing the chip rom too much voltage...seems most will agree anything beyond 1.7v is a big risk
