Pixel 2 or Note 8?

My friend is a big time android fanboy, and always talk about how his Pixel 2 is way better than Samsung Note 8. He talks about Samsung being slow unless you root it. He also says that the Pixel gets latest android updates and stuff which keeps it on top. Doesn't really admire the Note 8 camera either

What do ya guys think? What are someways in which the Note 8 is better than the Pixel?

I personally prefer Google devices for their native OS, and quick updates. I currently own an iPhone though XD

My S7 Edge was fast for like a month and then it wasn't. I wouldn't buy another Samsung so I vote Pixel 2. The Pixel 2 also has the best or maybe second best phone camera right now. Prices should be coming down as the Pixel 3 is coming out soon. As a third option you could consider a OnePlus 6. The camera is probably below the Note 8 but it's got a faster processor and it should get Android P about the same time as the Pixel 2.

As an owner of both, I vote note 8. The pixel was boring. Camera, while good, was way overrated. I prefer the samsung version of android and its samsung tweaks as well as the pen. Can't beat the pen. The screen is also much better.

Sometimes it's better to let others be the testers and get the software a bit later. One thing for google is it's AI, and then there is bixby ... I already have a google home, how many ai assistants do I really need? I know some people love bixby, but having a dedicated button on a device is like forcing their crap down on us. One reason why I haven't used it much

Maybe just wait for pixel 3! I wasn't impressed with Pixel 2.

Your friend is a moron. Here's what the Pixel 2 offers over the Note 8:
  1. Google's HDR algorithm (but you can get a Google Camera app for the Note 8)
  2. Immediate updates - that often break things
  3. Having to use Google's cloud for pictures, videos and music, constantly wasting your data
  4. I'm trying to think of a positive here...
  5. Getting to play with betas and janky community roms? I dunno...
What you get with the Note 8
  1. Monthly updates after Samsung fixes Google's bugs
  2. More usable features over Google's build of Android
  3. IP 68 water resistance
  4. Wireless Charging
  5. Micro SD card support
  6. Native theme engine that actually exists and has support
  7. Superior versions of Google's apps (Seriously, Samsung Email is a thousand times better than the Gmail app)
  8. The S-Pen.
  9. Secure Folder
  10. Better camera app (RAW support and Pro mode)
  11. Turning your phone into a Linux-based desktop machine (DeX dock and pad)
  12. Support for wireless casting to Mira AND Chromecast
  13. If you don't like or use Bixby, you can disable it using a package manager and us bxactions to map out the button to things.
Need I go on?

I wouldn't buy another Samsung
Why?

(Screen burn-in?)

Seriously OP, try each device for yourself and see what you like.

There's no benchmark or real world task that the Note 8 is in any way 'slow' compared with the Pixel.

Most of the Samsung software gripes are years out of date and just regurgitated blindly by fanboys.

If you're down with Google's idea of "features means removing or not having things!!! Like headphone jack, wireless charging, SD storage, waterproofing, a more modern design, etc) then go for it, 2015 awaits!

Like I said, my S7 Edge was great for about the first month but then it started to slow down. I found myself doing all the factory resets and reboots trying to fix it. At the one year mark the performance became really inconsistent. Some of my games were unplayable one day and then fine the next. It would also get really hot. I got the Gear VR and controller but I couldn't really enjoy it because the phone would overheat after 10 minutes. I've had a Nexus, G4, iPhone 6 and 7 and the S7 Edge was the only phone I've ever been disappointed with.

Did you ever try power saving mode to throttle cpu?

What's this supposed to mean?
You don't HAVE to use it, but you would also be a moron NOT to. There are just too many benefits.

He probably means the pixel 2 doesnt have a local pic/vid gallery as nearly all other android phones have. That was one of my reasons for getting rid of my pixels 2. It was too much like a stupid iphone.

I still don't get it. Google photos can also be "local" (though I would love to know why would anyone want that). Just turn off sync, or logout. And there are plenty of gallery apps in the play store.

What a ridiculous reason to get rid of zhe phone, when there are plenty of alternatives. On the other hand, on a samsung phone, you can't remove unvanged stuff. To ME, that is 1000x worse.

BS.

Google Photos works perfectly as a local only storage/gallery on both Pixels and any random Android phone. But skimming through this thread, the amount of outright falsehoods being cited makes it pretty clear what's going on.

Samsung has me just because of Secure Folder. Until Google gets something as robust and easy as that theres no way I could switch to a pixel.

Why not just set up your phone to sync only over wifi if you don't want it to sync and use data?

Yeah, SF is awesome and even transfers near seamlessly to another galaxy phone if you secure file are on an SD card.

I see we're just throwing any attempts at telling the truth out the window, especially around photo management. It's that or a big wall of ignorance.

Both are excellent phones, but it all comes down to what you prioritize:
1) Do you want the fastest / latest updates (Security or Android)? If so, go with Pixel 2.
2) Do you want the best camera? If so, go with Pixel 2.
3) Do you want a headphone jack, or wireless charging, or stylus, or microSD expansion? If so, go with Note 8.
4) Do you want the best screen, with minimal bezels, and 18:9 aspect ratio? If so, go with Note 8.

My wife has the Pixel 2, and I have the S8+. I get the best of both worlds here. We use her Pixel 2 for pictures (though the S8+ is no slouch). The S8+ is fantastic for media consumption, and all the other little features.

Pixel 2 is hardly the best camera.

Sounds like you had a defective device and you should've had it exchanged. I've got a (broken screen) S7 Edge that is running the 8.0 update and it runs exactly like it did on day one. In fact, it's now my full-time GearVR device and I have no performance problems even if I run it down to 10% battery.

What's this supposed to mean?

What? Yes you do. I have more pictures and videos taken with my phones on my uSD card than most Pixels (32gb) can hold, even if you had full access to their storage. Not only that, but if/when I switch to a new phone that has a uSD card slot, my pictures and videos are there, immediately, upon first boot, even before I sign into my Google account, with no cellular data allocation wasted. Why would I want to give that up for Google's cloud and be at the mercy of network conditions or Google's TOS? What benefits do you gain?

Why not just set up your phone to sync only over wifi if you don't want it to sync and use data?
That works fine if you only take enough pictures to stay under the limits of the Pixel's low amount of storage.
