Yeah hopefully in a few years we'll see some LG panels getting close to Samsung quality (didn't Apple and Google both invest money into LG's display business?), but for now I'll settle for the inferior display as long as it's not crap, which I don't think it will be.
It should be a great screen but as long as the grain does not show up under normal usage that's fine. I don't believe anyone uses the phone at 0% brightness. Still I find it annoying because it's $1k I spent, it should be without any issues.

Here's what I'm wondering about the XL 2 display. I had a BlackBerry Priv, which had a curved OLED display. My understanding is that LG's pOLED has long been above to do the curved screen game, and while I don't know for sure if the Priv had said pOLED inside, what I do know is that the Priv display exhibited EXACTLY what they're complaining about with the XL 2. And if that's the case, and the XL 2 display looks like my Priv's display...it sucks. The grain is super noticeable and weird.

I've seen the PXL2 in Verizon stores and in my limited time checking it out I did not notice the screen looking bad or anything. I feel like if it was really as bad as some are making it out to be I'd notice it (especially coming from an S8+), but I didn't, it looked fine to me.

Performance just might be the Pixel 2's killer app. Sure, ton of Android phones have a Snapdragon 835 and will score similarly in benchmarks, but the smoothness and general "speediness" differences you feel between a Pixel 2 and something like a Samsung Galaxy S8 cannot be overstated.
Haha... shocking. Key reason I ordered one.

It seems like it's a panel lottery in terms of quality. Some sites have 2XL screens with severe grain while others have minimal grain. I think the bigger concern is the colour shifting at angles that's been reported too.

As manifested on these phones, it seems to me that Android has now overtaken iOS in UI performance as well as design cohesion, in part because Apple created a hot mess in iOS 11.

I don't care so much for the angles as much as the grain. I also think it's something you will notice over time compared to right when you first start using the device.

The color shift at angles is not that big for me because I saw how much of an angle you need to lean to notice the blue tint and unless I'm using my phone with my head laying down parallel to the phone it's not something I'll notice. The grain though is what freaks me out.

I guess some of us will have it, some won't. Knowing my luck I'll probably go through 2 phones.

Also the color difference shouldn't be noticeable unless you are using 2 different phones all day. If you're just using the pixel you won't think the screen is bad in terms of colors.

I use my phone at 0% brightness all the time when reading books in bed before going to sleep.
Black background with 0% brightness is the only way to make it dim enough to not bother my eyes but still have enough light to see and read without issue.

To each their own though.

I tried using my 6p at 0% and I can't see anything properly and this is with my contacts/glasses too. Its not like the screen goes off it's just too dim. I prefer night mode when I'm reading in bed. Auto brightness off and set to like 20%, more than enough for me to see all the time.

0% is basically meant for pitched black darkness. I've used it a lot since I've owned a lot of AMOLED phones.

It is useful when you do not want to bother people around you in the dark. (e.g. theaters)

Amazon says both my cases were delivered today. My roommate got his and some other stuff on Amazon he ordered. Seems like a problem here for me with prime and their delivery drivers.

He just got a slim tpu case..seems very close to the size of the 6p just taller and a bit wider.

Well shit. This is completely the wrong way to handle these dongles imo.

Edit: Older confirmation article-- https://mobilesyrup.com/2017/10/06/pixel-2-xl-dac-missing/

This really makes no sense. You still have a DAC for the internal speakers. I really think not using USB-C analog audio is a huge mistake.
Updated post w/ more info. This also makes me wonder, is USB audio greatly improved in Oreo? Android USB audio has always been a hot steaming mess, so taking out the 3.5mm and leaving everyone to navigate a world of buggy DAC support is incredibly frustrating.

Got my Caseology cases yesterday. My Pixel 2 XL was shipped today with delivery on Thursday. No tempered glass screen protectors available(stupid black bezel ones or the complete clear ones which I'm looking for), so I just ordered the Shinomi Techskin screen protector. Can't wait! I never use my phone at 0% brightness even in the dark.

exactly what i do too

This is actually my main gripe with the otherwise awesome OP3, the screen does not go low enough.

Which phone do you use? I ask because with OLED, a black background is the same regardless of brightness, it's only the characters that should be emitting light. An LCD display would need lower brightness compared to an OLED display for this specific purpose.

or just dont use it in a theater like an arsehole
That cannot be right. I said that you can avoid being an "arsehole" in a dark environment by using an extreme low bright mode. The world does not stop because you are at a theater.

The theater seats also don't lock you in. Need to use your phone? Step outside and have at it.

I use night mode in the theater and I don't usually whip out my phone during a movie. Never tried 0% brightness so as long as it doesn't look grainy at the same brightness I use now, I'll be fine.

My phone will be here tomorrow.

I am not sure if I am making myself clear. At the extreme low brightness (e.g. Samsung Browser's "Night Mode"), AMOLED screen emits almost no light that might bother people around you, no more than a page of Playbill. So unless it is considered rude to check out a piece of paper in a theater I am not sure where this discussion is going.

P.S. Walking out and sneaking back in can cause as much, if not more, pain to fellow theater goers.

I am utterly jealous. Mine doesn't even ship until the 26th.
I was worried because one shipped and the other still said shipping the 17th but it updated late last night. Very excited to get done work and try it out.

Note8. I'm talking about 2-3am with no lights on whatsoever. I want the screen as dark as it will go. Werks for me™

Bummer to hear about the XL 2 screens. As the internet blows up with negativity on the subject i'm guessing there will be a bunch of returns. Returns = cheaper refurb units
