I charge my BT headphones once or twice a week, they're very quick to connect and the sound level and quality seem more than fine to my ears. Wireless is just so much more convenient. If I'm listening to something while on the couch, I can just get up and move around the house as needed and never think about wires or having to bring the phone/tablet around with me.

Well the Pixel was never going to have an mSD slot, so I don't see how it's really even something to discuss when it comes to Google's phone line.

64GB is plenty for me, never mind 128GB internal storage being an option. I've experienced two separate mSD failures in my lifetime of using smartphones. That is two times too many, I no longer trust them to hold important data.

Looking at the specified differences from: http://www.dsmt.com/resources/ip-rating-chart/

IP67 (specifically the '7' part which refers to liquids): Protected from immersion between 15 centimeters and 1 meter in depth.

IP68 (specifically the '8' portion): Protected from long term immersion up to a specified pressure.

Interestingly enough, I think with the Galaxy phones - which are IP68 - it says good for up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes. What exactly are you doing with your phone that makes the slight difference here meaningful?

I, too, need to be able to receive phone calls when photographing mermaids deep in the Pacific Ocean. :scootin:

Well I guess some people take their phone in the ocean or in the pool. I've even seen people on YouTube stick the phones in water and freeze them, then thaw them out to show that they are still working.

For me personally, I just need it to survive a drop in a puddle or maybe an accidental dunk.

Same here I never had a problem with my phones despite them not being waterproof. Was caught several times in heavy storms and my 6p never got damaged.

i have an S7 as my work issued phone, anything released in the past year would be an upgrade for you from it

It's my work phone on a yearly upgrade cycle. I was going to take a Note, but prefer the front fingerprint scanner. Was waiting to see Google's offering, I passed upgrading this year.

Thought briefly about trading in my Pixel for a 2. If it had a bezel-less screen I might have, but an incrementally better camera and faster SoC aren't enough. Given a choice between stereo speakers and a headphone jack, I'd take the latter, and waterproofing isn't a concern to me - I've never had a reason to use my phone underwater, and in all the years I've had a smartphone, using them in light rain or keeping them in a pocket that gets soaked has never been a problem. Granted, it's something I'd like, just not a major draw.

I don't mind have water resistance "just in case" but I've owned non-waterproofed phones since the Nexus One and I've never ever come close to getting them water-damaged either. It's very low in my list of important things anyway.

Hmm. I just saw the video on the new wireless headphones that uses Google Translate and I'm sold on it and the new Pixel 2. But I'm torn on which screen size to order. I like the 5" screen size but hate the large bezel. I like the look of the 6" XL but fear it might be too big and it's iPhone X type money. I'm still using iPhone 5s with dying battery so I need to upgrade this year.

You can try and order both and see which one you want. They will let you return either one no questions asked. I did this with the 6p years ago. Couldn't decide between Storm trooper black and white or silver. I ordered both, opened both, played with each one and decided to send back the silver model.

I contacted them about this too beforehand and they told me it was ok to do that.

I know the XL will be a bit bigger than the 6p and probably similar in size to the Nexus 6 but not as wide of course. So you should still be able to hold it with one hand easily as it won't be wide on the sides.

It's an outright admission that they have shittier engineers when the S8+ is all of being equally thin, having smaller bezels and having equal battery capacity while retaining the audio jack and waterproofness.

At least it doesn't explode.

I agree their engineering and design needs more work. Either they were lazy or in a time crunch like last year. Now that they bought rights to HTC factories maybe in the next few years we may see better designs. I found it funny that their explanation was to have it bezel free yet it still has bezels on the side. The top and bottom are ok I guess because you need room for front speakers.

I would say Samsung has the best mobile phone hardware engineers with what they've been able to accomplish. But, hardware alone doesn't win the race for my wallet. Software is also important, and to me Google beats everyone else in that aspect.

Wonder why they didn't explain why they took away the headphone jack. This here states this is where the future is headed.

http://bgr.com/2017/10/06/pixel-2-headphone-jack-iphone-x-design/

Still that doesn't explain why they couldn't take away a little more of the bezels but I found it interesting.
That reasoning is silly, certainly with regard to the title, why Apple got rid of the jack...

...because in the future they want to make an all screen phone. Pfft!

That's as silly an excuse as if an auto maker today made a car without a steering wheel or the ability to shift, and claimed "because we want to make driverless cars eventually."

Yes, you take away things people still need in current models, to pave the way for future things. Except that's silly. Driverless cars in the future or not, TODAY you still need a damn steering wheel, brakes, gas pedal, ability to shift, etc.

And neither Apple or Google is pushing the boundaries and leading the pack of bezel-to-screen ratios, so that's claptrap as well. I'm sure they want to do all-screen designs in the future, but that's not why they took away the headphone jack currently. They take away or not include features for a very simple reason: to make more money. They want to sell their wireless headphones, their dongles, 64 measly gigs of storage for $100, and didn't want to add $2 to the cost of each phone including wireless charging hardware, etc...

They're using the fact that of course things will radically change in the future, like it's a validexcuse to get rid of things still in use by millions of people today. Some people are fine with that and don't care about the missing features, but at least call it as it is.

"They didn't include a dual camera because in the future we'll take photos with laser beams, and there's no wireless charing because in the future your device will recharge itself from sunshine and moonbeams and yada yada yeah right stop lying and get real already."

Got an email from Google saying the redeem code for the Home Mini will come around 4 weeks after I get my Pixel 2.

Yea same here I guess they don't want people to get it for free if they cancel their order. But for $45 I wouldn't get it. I'd be more interested in their home max for the living room.

I'm also interested in how music quality of the pixel buds are. The translation seems really nice but I doubt it's perfect every time and for complicated phrases.

$50 is impulse buy range for me, which is why I don't have a Google Home even though I've been itching to get one. Was waiting for the Dot competitor, and we now have the Mini. Getting it for free is just icing on the cake.

The Max is cool, but I'm not big into music so it's useless to me.

The buds are neat, but I don't see myself spending $160 when I already have a decent pair of BT headphones.

I find it funny people complain about phone design. Like any of them actually keep phones naked. The moment they get that sexy slick S8+ they put a bulky case on it. Who cares, it is a slab with screening top. As long as it is not pink or oddly shaped, why cares? Oh wait never mind.....

Seriously I am typing this on a Pixel with the dreaded Uuuge bezel, but I like it because I can actually hold it securely without accidentally hitting back button . What bezel, the phone is silky smooth unlike all Galaxies I have had. In fact Everytime I see big chin and forehead I am reminded of how great software is on the Google Pixel.

Just preordered a Google Pixel 2 XL full black. I wanted the black and white version, but that was out of stock. Oh well, I always have a case on my phones so it's not a big deal. I am coming up from a Nexus 6p, which I will sell after I get my new Pixel 2 XL

I don't use cases, ever. Don't like them, and I like to appreciate good physical design. Also I think not having a case is what keeps me from breaking my phones. In my lifetime of owning smartphones, I've dropped and cracked a screen only once, and that was a long time ago. The people who drop their phones most often are the same ones who buy bulky cases, in my experience.

They look better in videos than in pre-launch leak pictures. Still I am not sure why the XL has to cost $200 more. I suspect the display is the culprit for that, which might means the quality of display is going to be awesome. I've heard that LG's new fab can churn out high-quality OLED panels but only at very low yields.

And $100 extra for 64 GB extra storage is worse than Apple's, ugh.
