i can do some grabs of the 2XL vs S7 tomorrow if you are interested. just LMK if you wanna see something specific

i run the S7 on basic mode for the display. IE non super saturated colors. which is similar to the 2XL

Here's what I'm wondering about the XL 2 display. I had a BlackBerry Priv, which had a curved OLED display. My understanding is that LG's pOLED has long been above to do the curved screen game, and while I don't know for sure if the Priv had said pOLED inside, what I do know is that the Priv display exhibited EXACTLY what they're complaining about with the XL 2. And if that's the case, and the XL 2 display looks like my Priv's display...it sucks. The grain is super noticeable and weird.
I own a gflex2. And well i know the grain well and it was blatantly obvious on that.

I figured maybe LG had figured it out by now. I was really on the fence as to which phone to get when the pixel's preorder was announced. But given you are paying $200+tax more for the XL I expected it to be perfect. Not sure if ill regret this (probably wont, normal pixel 2 and its better form factor imho has advantages too) but i canceled my XL order and changefd to the normal 2.

I figure even if it was "not that bad" i don't feel like paying $900+ after tax for a phone should make you have any issues. Thats a lot of money , and even if its affordable you have to vote with your dollars a bit

Mine doesn't have any grain at 0% brightness. I tried it out doing some reading tonite and I can understand why some people would want to read with that setting. Didn't strain my eyes and I didn't notice any tint going that low either. It was just flat white but dull which is again due to the cold display they chose to go with.

I played around with the camera some more and it's just awesome. I don't find myself using the squeeze action too much. That's probably one thing I don't like about it but maybe when I get a case it will feel better. The phone is thin and squeezing it like that seems awkward.

I got close to 5hrs of screen time from the moment I got up at seven until 930pm with heavy usage, streaming, Bluetooth devices connected.

It did reboot on its own so I lost a good chunk of battery due to that but it's only the first day with it and I suppose things still need to settle.

Unless there are some bad batches out there in my opinion the whole screen thing is a bit out of proportion as mine at least is crisp and very visible. It is cold and I'm fine with that I find that taking pics like this shows a more natural hue. At first it may seem dull but it's nice and bright even with 20% brightness.

If they do push an update to increase the color warmth that would more preferable to everyone I think.

you can use an app to change the color temp if you wanted

i used twilight to do it before they made "night mode" a built in feature

Ok. I think the rounded edges of the screen are dumb. Makes the display smaller b/c of the edge border. Rather the display had gone all the way to the bezel and be recessed into it. And if you put a case on it, it just creates a crevice for all sorts of stuff to get trapped in it.

I tried it at 0% and don't believe it's grainy but it's so dark that it makes reading difficult, if I raised the brightness to 2%, I can read everything and see no graininess either.

It's fast. When I started taking pictures with it, I thought HDR+ was off b/c it took the photo so quickly and reminded me if when I have HDR+ off on my Nexus 6P. And editing pictures via phone is super fast too. I used to go into Google Photos on my desktop to edit photos but no need to anymore which is a good thing b/c some apps like Instagram will only use the copy saved on the camera and not from Google Photos. Battery life is really good too.

They stopped making the play versions a long time ago.. probably because only developers bought them.

Had the chance to use my sunglasses with the phone today. I can see everything very nicely without even increasing my brightness. I'm guessing regular sunglasses are fine even though mine are already polarized. I was never able to use the 6p with sunglasses before. No glare or anything on the screen.

Yeah it has Verizon shit on it but you may be able to disable it. They are all unlocked as far as I know. If you ordered a Verizon model from Google it just comes with a Verizon Sim card.

The only thing you may not be able to do is unlock the bootloader on the Verizon edition.

The Verizon apps are installed when you insert Verizon sim, but you can uninstall. The only different is locked bootloader.

I just changed my order from the pixel 2 to pixel 2 xl. Coming from a pixel 1 xl. Just been watching some YouTube videos comparing the screens between the pixel 2 and 2 xl. There is a difference but then I watched a video that compared the 2 xl screen vs the 1 xl screen. Again there was a difference but then they turned on sRGB on the pixel 1 xl, the screens looked exactly the same. I've been using sRGB on my pixel 1 xl for about 5 months now and I love it. So to me the color difference is a non-issue. As far as the blue tint issue goes: I've watched about 5 YouTube videos showing this blue tint when looking at the pixel 2 xl screen at an angle. I can barely tell any difference and to me it's really being blown out of proportion. How often do you look at your phone from an angle? For me, besides looking at notifications when my phone's on the table - the phones directly infront of me. Ultimately I decided if I'm going to upgrade from the original pixel XL, I might as well go all in and get the 2 XL. I have big hands anyway and I'm not sure I'd like going back to a 1080p screen considering how heavily I use my phone, especially for viewing Excel files for work. Also it seems the pixel 2 (non-xl) has issues with a clicking noise being audible while on a phone call. Apparently it's the NFC feature trying to connect to a NFC credit card. I worry that this won't be fixable with a software update and may require RMA's. For me personally I need the phone to be flawless when making phone calls. I'd say on average I'm on phone calls for about 2 to 3 hours a day.

Hmm, more complaints about the Pixel 2 XL burn-in issue...

For the past week, reviewers have been complaining about screen issues; there are reports of a strange blue tint, inaccurate color reproduction, and more. But as you can see from the image above, things have gotten worse. The picture was posted to Twitter by Alex Dobie of Android Central after just seven days of full-time use. If you look closely, there is screen burn-in towards the bottom of the device showing the on-screen navigation buttons permanently in place. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be an isolated incident, as Tim Schiesser of Hardware Unboxed and TechSpot have also experienced the same.

Had a pretty good play time with the 2XL at best buy today and immediately turned off by the color shift/blue tint. My phone sits on my desk most of the time so I like to glance at it for messages and notifications and it was a lot worse then the LCD on my Huawei mate 8.

Can't imagine paying $1000 and having to live with such compromises.

Yeah this morning I got 35 min sot before it dropped to 98%. Overall I've been getting 4hrs of screen time, more like 5 though most times. I do have Bluetooth on all the time for my smartwatch too. Some people get 6hrs or maybe more of screen time but I haven't been able to pull that off yet.

I tested my screen for burn in using the images here. Go full screen then drag the tiles to where the nav bar and notification bar sit and check for burn in.

None on my unit and it's been about 3 days with 5hrs of screen on day. I would definitely rma if I notice it in a month or so.

Well, OLED/AMOLED screens are very susceptible to burn-in, in general. Just look at the plethora of used Samsung AMOLED tablets with burn-in before Samsung learned their lesson. Now I guess it's Google's turn to learn to pixel move fixed placed items.

That's nowhere remotely close to being the solution to the problem lol. I like to swipe, pick up/put down my stuff, etc at a moment's notice and not have to shimmy things from a dock.

I'm at a point in my life where hardware features are more important than software. I don't want my house to look like a college kid's dorm room with wires everywhere. I'm sure the 98 DxO score will impress all the Instagram preteens, but for a cool $1k, that and the OS updates aren't enough to impress me just yet.

I don't even understand how people find wireless to be an acceptable charging solution. It's slow as shit, it heats the phone up, and if my dog on the other side of the room farts it'll misalign and stop charging so I wake up to a phone at 23% battery.

Is wireless the reason it gets hot, or is it the SoC? I remember my S7 getting hot at times when charging (wired not wireless), but my S8+ never got hot, like ever. Only sitting in the baking sun would make it feel hot, never charging. Granted I didn't have a wireless charger so I don't know how it performs with that, but I know the SD835 ran very well.

Wireless is less efficient the further away the 2 coils are and generates heat. Fast charging with increased amperage will also generate more heat.

I use a wireless dock at my work desk and it's become a must have feature now, too useful.
