I don't even understand how people find wireless to be an acceptable charging solution. It's slow as shit, it heats the phone up, and if my dog on the other side of the room farts it'll misalign and stop charging so I wake up to a phone at 23% battery.
My car dock.

It sits just above the steering wheel so it like a heads up display. My phone attaches to it with magnets and starts to wirelessly charge as soon as the ignition is on.

So get in car, throw phone at dock. Phone switches on, starts charging and switches to android auto mode and to the cars Bluetooth.

Turn ignition off, grab phone, phone turns to normal mode. Walk off.

i still have a nexus 5 as a test phone. I remember when i got it i bought a qi mat and after about 3 days thought it was completely the most worthless thing ever.

it heated up the phone, you had to align it very well and it charged super slow. it was like charging on a 500 mA 5v charger from an old school dumb phone. I thought it was excruciating even when top of the line chargers were just 1amp or maybe 2amp ones. With usb c chargers putting out 15-27w qi charging is just so so so much slower now.

I'm glad google got rid of it, it is notthat useful and honestly plugging a cable in is easier than ever with usb c being reversible

How well does the Pixel 2/XL handle HDR playback? On my Galaxy S8 the safest max res is 720p because of frame drops at 1080p and higher. Also curious to know how LG's OLED handles HDR material.

Here is a test clip -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTGm7mye-_4
I can't get the option to run that higher than 1080p60. Seems to run fine at that on an S7E so I'm surprised it won't on an S8! Looks OK to me anyway, it's giving me motion sickness which seems to be a good indication of smoothness!

Maybe it was just Google wireless charging that was crap? Samsungs wireless fast charging is pretty fast.

I've noticed it's an issue with Youtube HDR content, netflix plays 1080p HDR just fine seemingly, at least it did when I was watching Chef's table.

Are you sure that HDR is enabled? Not on the clip's title but from YouTube app's quality setting. Another way to check is how much bandwidth is utilized for the playback via "Stats for Nerds." It seems like somewhere around 40~45 Mbps is a limit on the S8. (1080p HDR playback of the linked clip goes over 50 Mbps) Finally the image quality - after watching HDR playback the regular playback looks bland and washed out. I know that sounds absurd for such a quality film I linked earlier but that is what HDR does.

In any case, it is a good news that you can view HDR content at 4K/60fps because that indicates that SD835 is not the culprit. Maybe it is a software issue after all.

Edit: Nevermind on the bandwidth test. HDR requires more bandwidth, but it does not seem like a sufficiently reliable way to tell HDR is enabled.

To be fair, that's not really an indication of image quality. If you use the Vivid mode of the S8 for long term and then suddenly switch to its sRGB accurate mode, it'll look bland and washed out too but the S8's sRGB mode is extremely accurate and high quality.

It is a different kind, though.

p.s. I guess the most reliable way is via YouTube app.

The S8 throttles and drops massive amount of frames within 20 seconds of 1440p/60 HDR playback.

Overall I'm pleased with my pixel 2 xl. I've downloaded a gray background to check for burn in and will rma if I see it. What I've seen is ghosting. What looks like light emitted from the bottom, and seems like an outline of the nav bar. But after I turn off the screen and check later it's no longer there. I think this is normal for oled panels.

Performance and battery wise this phone is awesome. Yesterday I got more than 5hrs screen time and it was around 32% when I went to bed. Today a little heavier usage I'm at 56% with 2hrs of sot.

No, that isn't normal for OLED panels. One of their best features is high contrast & deep blacks with no backlight.

OLEDs shouldn't be doing that and if it is, you should RMA.

It really seems to me that LG's OLED is simply 4 years behind Samsung's. A lot of these issues remind me of the older Galaxies.

Here's another problem that's cropping up with the "smearing effect" which was a problem with Samsung's panels that gradually got better with each generation: https://www.gsmarena.com/google_pixel_2_xl_display_reportedly_has_black_smear_issues-news-27886.php

This one looks a bit worse than then GS4 I used to have.

I don't notice it anymore I've tried a grey and black background and I didn't see any burn in. My roommate says on his model it's still there. But yeah if I see it come back I'm going to send it back for a replacement.

I got mine last night.. notice the blue shift but I don't know if its RMA/return worthy. Everything else about the screen looks A-OK though. Over saturated colors have always bothered me on my S6 so I like the colors.

I do need another USB-C to 3.5mm converter for work.. unless I can convince the wife I need a pair of $350 wireless Sony's..

Battery life is so much better than my S6 though. At 40% with almost 4 hours of SOT.

I wonder if they will really be able to solve these screen problems, if it's something inherent to the panel they're producing and not defective units then it's pretty much a problem everyone will have to some degree. It's too bad LG is having problems, it would be nice to have more than one major player producing good OLEDs for phones. At this point I'm tempted to cancel my XL and get the regular Pixel 2 but I would miss the big screen and bigger battery for sure.

Anyone with both a S8/Note 8 and Pixel 2XL able to do a comparison with the Samsung in basic mode? I run Basic in all my phones and while it looks more toned down, I wouldn't call it dull. If the Pixel 2XL is the same, then IMO at least for that criticism, it's way overblown.

i can
what you wanna see i can prob get images/vid of it today. will likely break the S8 today or tomorrow for work

I have to agree.

It looks like LG is at least 4 years behind Samsung in display tech, but even so, the early Samaung AMOLED displays didn't seem to be that bad (other than more prone to burn in). I still use my original Tab S8.4 and that display is still as prestine today as when I got it 3+ years ago (and that's after I changed the battery). IMO LG is just not up to task on their OLED displays compared to Samsung.

After using Samsung's AMOLED displays for so many years I couldn't go back to what I'm seeing today from LG.

I hope Google can just correct the retention or burn in by pulsing the nav bar at greater than 60hz like they do on the oled TV's.

I would rma mine but it's very hard to get on camera and take a picture of it. It's barely noticeable.

I have the Note 8 and received the Pixel 2 XL yesterday.

Interesting - that's the Note 8 in basic mode? If so then I kind of get the criticism since recent Samsung phones in basic are supposed to be very accurate but the colors do look richer compared to the 2XL. Normally wouldn't be an issue but at the price point of the 2XL, I think some nitpicking is OK.

Looked at one in a VZW store yesterday. Surprisingly the only thing that bothered me was the blue tint, which I thought was a grossly overblown problem. On the unit I was looking at unless you held the phone completely perfectly then you would either see blue shift at the top or bottom when reading a white web page. No grain, didn't notice any burn/IR, colors were good enough. But the blue was pretty distracting. What's odd is I read more about it online and some people are seeing it with as little as 5-10 degrees (what I experienced) and others don't see it until angle is over 30-45 degrees (what I expected). Seems like a weird problem to have that much variation on viewing angle.
