Good on Google.

So basically you get to use the pixel 2XL worry-free for the next 2yrs and "replace" it with a 3 or 4XL at no cost... (as that's how Google handle replacements)

They only started replacing 6p's with pixels just recently before the pixel 2 was revealed. Probably to get rid of old stock. I wouldn't say that will be the case from now on.

But 2 years warranty which will include easy RMA's if needed and a screen software update should make a lot more people happy.

Also it says the new update will make the navbar dynamically go away when inactive and they will lower max brightness by 50 nits. Although it won't affect what we see. They said this will fix and prevent burn in. The color update will include a more saturated mode that will make the pixel 2 similar to the original pixel colors.

I know they did it recently with the 6P, but from an economy of scale perspective, it would make more sense for them to give you a new (current) model than replacing it with the old one. It costs a tremendous amount of overhead to overproduce something just to keep a stockpile of them for RMA purposes (not to mention replacement parts, tech support, etc) than to simply replace with whatever is available in the current supply chain.

I vaguely remember hearing that OLED display follows an exponential decay curve, due to chemical reaction of the organic materials used. That means the screen is most vulnerable to burn-ins when it is new. (even when it is undetectable) The best practice is to use it carefully at its early stage of lifespan. (e.g. no max brightness)

Yeah I've hear this quite often as well, and heard the same thing for plasma TV's. For plasma TV's people recommend rotating through a set of images to kind of burn in the pixels evenly at first. I did it on mine and I don't have any burn in after a couple years of owning it. Not sure if that initial step helped or if it's just a placebo. I did the same thing on my pixel XL as well and I have no burn in after a year of owning it, but I am also pretty careful not to leave my screen on and I usually use my screen at like 20-30% brightness unless I'm outside so that probably helped as well. I'll definitely try it on my XL 2 when I get it, might not do anything but it won't hurt.

Now that you mention it, I did the same with my plasma too (still running strong). If that's the case, then simply running a bright white to "pre-burn" the screen would probably mitigate most of it.

Google got back to my roommate about the burn in. Not sure what they will do but the gist of it was that they will call him back again with more information.

Google Samsung S8 burn in. You get the same "issue".

My Panasonic V60 is going strong without burn in because I make sure I run different images periodically like in baseball games. If you take.care of it it will last. Same as OLED.

I'm more concerned with the blue tint than anything else, and that appears to be a lotto. I have seen very very few people actually complain about graininess, and I think the "burn-in" can be managed around (plus warranty).

Really happy with this battery life so far...

That's pretty good I'm at 49% and only about 2hrs screen time. I did get close to 4hrs the first few days.

Edit: Got 8.1 installed via the update beta program. The nav bar now dims and matches the color of apps to reduce burn in. Brightness of nav bar reduces by a lot when it's black. If the navbar changes color the icons dim out to match that color as long as the app supports it.

I guess this will prevent any more damage from burn in. I barely notice the burn in on my now unless I put it at 100% brightness. But even then it seems to be going away. It's almost invisible at this point so I think fading out the navbar will help realign the pixels that may get stuck.

Is there a burn-in issue in the S8 as well? I wasn't aware of this.
Edit: Did some reading up and well, well. It is apparent there as well. Now I really don't know what phone to buy as I was almost certainly fixated on the S8 plus.

All OLEDs burn in to a degree. The Pixel 2 XL is only notable because some units may be burning in within a couple weeks.

I can say that with the changes to the fading out of the nav bar, my burn in has become less and less visible. If I'm really nitpicky I can slightly make it out. If I could exchange it I would just to be on the safe side but seeing how google has yet to replace my roommate's pixel 2 which has even more burn in visible than mine, I think I may wait until they push out the screen color adjustment update.

I'm on Android 8.1 now and it's not in this developer preview.

My roommate is getting his XL 2 replaced by google. But they did tell him that they will check his phone when it arrives and if it does not fall within warranty guidelines he will be charged again.

Discovered my XL has the audio bug, after taking some videos and SnapChat videos, playing them back the audio has a high pitch teeny sound. Unacceptable and heard Google is going to fix it in the software patch.

Yea mine has it too. My roommate is getting his pixel replaced. I can't get mine replaced because I can't capture a picture of the burn in like his unit has. I'm on 8.1 and the fading out nav bar I think might have fixed the burn in for me.

Got my Pixels. No apparent screen problems other than blue tint. 10 degree side to side, and 10 degree top towards you and you get noticeable shift. No noticeable shift until the bottom is tilted > 45 deg toward you. It's also not as blue as others I've seen. I think I'm just going to suck it up since it's not that bad. The one I saw in the VZW store would have had me seeing blue in normal hand position all the time. My unit does not so good enough I guess.

Other than that, this phone is crazy good. It is incredibly fluid and the battery life is insane. Haven't played with camera yet.

I've had my Panda Pixel 2 XL since Monday. I was strongly considering canceling the pre-order because of the blue shift issue. I wasn't too worried about the screen burn-in, felt Google would replace the phone if that happened (they just replaced my Pixel XL because of that after a year).

So far, I am very happy with my Pixel 2 XL. The blue shift is definitely there and it doesn't take much of an off angle to see it. But it's not the distraction I thought it would be and I really don't even notice it in day to day use. It's one of those things that when I'm thinking about it and looking for it I see it, but other than that I really don't see it when I'm not thinking about it. Also with my dark wallpaper and dark themed apps, I can't see it at all. So my biggest fear ended up being a non-issue for me.

Just checked for screen burn-in. No trace of it so far. I've been running my display on auto brightness.

Speaking of brightness, still not great outdoors. Seems similiar brightness as my Pixel XL. But good enough.

Turn off auto brightness if you want to be able to see better outside. Auto brightness is annoying and also wastes battery.

Does anyone know how to make the calendar widget dark background? I had it dark on my S6 but can't find an option for this anywhere and it's making me crazy.

Maybe that was the Samsung Calendar widget instead of Google's?

I've never seen google's calendar in dark mode. You can download a third party calendar app though which may have this setting.

All the bad press about the screen problems with the XL convinced me to go with the smaller Pixel 2. But I would prefer the white one but that's out of stock. Same thing with the white pixel buds. I don't understand why Google won't let you place orders with estimated shipping date. Does Google have no idea when they might get new stock? It's been several years since I tried to buy products from the Google store and I see they still have the same issue. It's like they can't figure out how to tie their shoes.

I was finally able to get pictures of my burn in to prove to Google that my second pixel 2 has it. They are sending me a new one this week. Honestly unless they change the screen I think they all will burn in quickly. Some people are going to wait until the spring to order a phone just to see if they changed anything in the screen hardware.
