Pixel updated to Oreo

Yesterday my pixel got the update for oreo.

I'd not followed any of the beta's or news as much this time round so everything new is coming as a surprise.

First impressions are that not much has changed. Boot time is faster (but it was supposed to be). I love the Pixel's update mechanism of doing all the updates in the background and simply turning off and on again.

Biggest difference I've seen so far:

• The settings icon and alarms are now below the quick settings toggle
• After the update the time was 5 mins out for a few hours
• It looks like bluetooth has become more flakey. I'm just listening to spotify on a bluetooth speaker and its dropping pretty frequently.
• I love the notification colour change when playing music or podcasts
• The double tap to wake has a few changes in how it shows things
• WiFi assistant is wonderful

Whatsapp's video calls seem broken. The receiving person can see my video, but i don't get a mini view of my camera. Whatsapp support are looking into this.

Hopefully, it’s an easily diagnosed problem, and it won’t take Google long to fix. There’s no way it’ll push Android Oreo to devices with this as a known issue, so if it takes weeks to solve, it could end up negatively impacting the timeline for getting Oreo to devices.​

New versions of Android have had pretty minimal feature updates for the last several releases. Mobile devices operating systems are pretty mature at this point it seems. I feel like Google just releases a new version of Android so they can get more people to buy new phones.

I think a lot of the new app APIs are all covered by the updates to Google Play Services.

Android seemed pretty well done with marshmallow and now I think you're right, there is a lot of tweaking under the hood.

Android may not show you much up front with the last few updates, but the backend has been fundamentally re-designed, very nearly from the ground up. Especially so for Oreo. It is a massive update, and to say otherwise is simply ignorant.

I've quickly got used to it. It also makes me clear away facebook chatheads a lot faster.

PiP for maps is actually pretty damn cool. Skype used to do this too but a recent update killed it so maybe they're in the process of moving to use the official PiP api's for it.
