A girl in one of my online classes, in which plagiarism was specifically written about in the syllabus, submitted about a half page of writing for a bulletin board assignment that contained multiple sentences and phrases taken word-for-word from exactly three uncited sources. It hardly seems ethical...

Unethical. If the prof/teach is decent they'll recognize it. Then again, they might not care...

Oh, I doubt she's decent. I actually have to respond to what my classmate wrote, and it's sooo tempting to comment on the fact that she didn't write anything. I'm not sure what the proper etiquette is these days, but I assume most people would tell me to just leave it.

Not much harder, and it's also a lot less risky.

did she tell you? or did you find that out by looking online?

if you found out online, maybe the person who grades the reports will find out also.

It is completely unethical. That being said, let it go. It is not you responsibility to keep track of things like that. Be nice. You never know when you may end up in a similar situation.

I didn't say anything, but not because I may end up in a similar situation. It's not like plagiarism is something that just happens to you, at least in my experience.

I've never done it either. However when you are tiered, ticked off, hours away from a critical deadline, and no way to complete the work in time you would be surprised what you may consider. I am not condoning plagiarism in any way. I think it is wrong and unethical. But, it happens. If she gets caught by the instructor she will face the consequences of her actions. If not... Then its just dumb luck.

definitely unethical.

as an English major, the policy in almost all of my major classes was plagurism = instafail the course and lose any trust you had with any teachers within the department. multiple offences could result in expulsion.

it's just so stupid and pointless.

Whenever I was faced with this problem I found ways of letting the person know that I knew and they better shape up. In dental school we had out class president handle these situations. Usually the person had a decent reason to cheat (even if I don't agree, some people cannot handle their stress) but there were those that we chronic cheaters that I wish got caught but never did.
