I have a question similar to Omer's I think. I see that this is quite the hot deal and would not mind buying a flat panel monitor in the near future (at this rate of spending, I do not think I will ever buy a car, heheh). I would like to get a video card with dual head (i.e. one VGA and one DVI). Does anyone here know if the "Pivot" software will screw-up the "dual-head" software? I think it would be really nice to have a portrait (i.e. skinny and tall) orientation for the flat-panel and also have a large VGA monitor (19" or 21" preferrably). Does anyone have any experience with such a setup?

Thanks for any ideas anyone can offer.

Great deal,
ChunkyBarf

I've had my planar 17.4 for about 3 months now, and now I'm blind... (just kidding)... Actually this is the best monitor I have ever seen. Much better than any laptop monitor I have ever used. the only thing I wish was that it could do higher than 1280x1024

The SYS only has a 250:1 contrast ratio while the Planar has a 400:1.. Screen brightness is more important to me than an additional 0.7" of viewing space..

I agree ? the SYS is 18.1" but it is analog only, is not as bright and has a much slower refresh hate and a much lower contrast ratio ... you will loose a lot of picture quality for the added 0.7".

I would like to thank this forum for saving me just under $200 dollars. I have been researching 17-18" flat panels for a couple of weeks. I determined that I needed to get a unit with a DVI digital connection for best picture quality. A unit with at least 300:1 contrast ratio, 220+ brightness and better than 40ns refresh rating. I narrowed the search down to the Samsung 170T or the Princeton SENergy 750, with the Viewsonic VG171b a distant third. The Dell 1702 was only considered because of the DVI connection styling and cost.

The Planar wasn't on my list ... until featured on this forum. At $593.10 out the door I couldn't be more please. It meets all of my criteria, the people at their customer support answered all of my questions and I am anxiously awaiting the unit's arrival.

So ... which wireless router should I buy with the $200.00 saved?

Thanks to you all!

<< laugh --

Plus I have to figure out what to do with my 21" Viewsonic p815 -- this thing is huge & heavy ! Actually, any vid cards able to run dual monitors w/ 1 running DVI ( the lcd ), and the other running ananlog vga ( the crt ) ? should be possible ...
>>

The obvious choice is Radeon 8500.

<< anyone play first-person shooter w/ this monitor? does it look ok? >>

Not in this monitor in particular, but I spent the last 2 weeks playing counter-strike on it's 21" big brother (big, giant, silly grin), and it looked awesome. problem with the bigger monitor was it had to scale down to 1280x1024 resolution which caused some artifact problems; if your shooter runs in native resolution on the LCD, it'll look great.

the radeon 8500 has dual output (one analog, one DVI)...it even comes with a DVI->analog converter so you can use 2 analog monitors instead of one analog and one DVI

I would like to test drive this monitor. What's dell's return policy just in case I decide not to keep it?

I was going to jump on this myself, but will prolly wait for the next gen. ones since I am hearing mixed opinions regarding the ghosting effect on this model.

I've been looking for an LCD for a while, and when this one popped up, I jumped on it. When I was given the option of choosing a shipping type, I noticed that they were all $0.00, so I chose Next Day Air. When the sale was all finalized, it still showed $0 for shipping, and it still showed next day air. Finally, when I got the confirmation email, it still showed a total of $593.10, with next day shipping(!). Since I financed the deal thru Dell (at least until I get my tax return back), the shipping date isn't until midweek, but I'll post here when I get it to let you know 1) if it actually ships next day air, and 2) how it performs.

I also found that this is for the black model only. The white model is $40 more for some odd reason. I can only assume that they have too many black ones on hand.

These monitor are drop shipped Fedex 2nd day from Planar, not Dell, so it probably doesn't matter what shipping option you choose.

the 8500 might, but i dont think the 8500 AIW can run a DVI and analog at the same time

<< Although, theoretically, all RADEON cards support dual display modes in hardware, AIW cards are limited to the use of only a single monitor at a time. This can be either a digital monitor connected by DVI or a conventional analog CRT (using an adapter). So, in this case, the dual display feature is limited to the TV-Output (e.g. monitor + TV-Out). >>

Well, my display shipped out this afternoon & I got the FedEx tracking number from Dell's website. When I looked at FedEx's tracking page, I found that it DID ship overnight. Sooo.... the LCD should be in tomorrow, so I'll post here what I think of it.

who's SYS? never heard of it. for that price, it should be grade B panel.

Don't forget Planar has 3 years free both way shipping immediate exchange warranty, it shouldn't be that cheap if there is no dell.

Planar from dell is always an unbeatable deal.

Could also get a ATi 7500 and save $100. That's what I did Though now I want one of the AIW cards (7500 or 8500).

BTW, love this monitor!!! I got this deal a while back..mine came to $621 shipped. With the DVI on this 7500 it's beautiful, and fps are excellent too, from Quake3 and Half-Life all the way back to Doom II!!

Depending on the CRT, I'd say that a 17.4" LCD will have either about the same or perhaps a little less (maybe about 1/2") viewing area. Just my .02

Typically a 19" CRT will have a viewable area of 18-18.1". A 17.4" LCD has...17.4" of diagonal viewing area!

The 17.4" LCDs will be best at 1280x1024 as will the 19" CRTs though some 19" CRTs will do 1600x1200 reasonably well.

Response time on modern LCD's is more than adequate. I have a samsung 170s (25ms) and my friend has a kds rad 7 (35ms) and they both look spectacular. I get absolutely no ghosting on anything, including quake III, which moves exceptionally fast. BTW, be sure to check out that text anti-aliaser at microsoft if you have an LCD. My monitor has it built in and it makes viewing web pages so much more comfortable.

This is a great deal... but I will also wait till the next generation lcds are out. Considering the ghosting with gameplay and dvds.. lcds dont appeal to me so much.. and maybe later on in the near future they will be priced competetively and will give you better performance.
