wow. nice price.

I'm still holding out for the next gen lcd with lower response time -- but @ this price it's quite attractive.

You might be able to do even better on the Dell Small Business side. They have a 15% off coupon and they're offering free shipping now also. Dell Small Business taxes anyone with a state sales tax, I believe, so if your sales tax is near 5% then the Home side may be cheaper.

Edit: It seems I can't override the automatic 10% off promotion on monitors on the Dell Small Business side so I doubt anyone will be able to use the 15% off code at least on monitor deals.

Great deal. I've been waiting for another special on these from Dell. Finally dropped below $600 again. My total came to $593 shipped to Cali from Dell @Home.
These monitors got kudos in past Dell AT specials. Forums is costing/saving me a fortune. thanks fengpc for the heads up
BTW Dell Small Business won't let you stack the 15% coupon on top of the 10% (I tried). With the tax charged by Small business it was cheaper to buy from the Home store.

I wasn't trying to stack them. I was just trying to use the 15% instead of the 10% but the system won't let you remove the 10% coupon. Dell business automatically applies the 10% to the monitor portion, it'd be 15% if it was a Dell branded monitor. Dell is getting smarter.

Kind of OT, but what are the disadvantages to using the analog input over the digital input? I'm looking to get a new video card and a flat panel in the future, but vid cards with DVI are considerably more expensive.

No offense meant EarthToday. Even with the 15% discount (instead of 10) and adding on tax it would still come out cheaper from Dell Home.

Analog looks uglier. Or maybe not -- it looks less precise. Sometimes colors can be slightly off, it can be not-exactly square, not as crisp (particularly at high resolutions). Many newer LCD's have a "auto-adjust" function to adjust the analog signal to be square and colored correctly. You can never "auto-adjust" a digital signal, since the digital signal is precise and doesn't need adjusting.

It's nice to have both. I wonder if they have a switch, so you could hook up two computers to one like my Sony monitor.

yes you can use one for 2 machines

i use the previous model, one PC connected to the DVI, the other to the analog. Just tap the button on the front and it will switch between PCs.

No offense taken. I was too quick with the trigger when I originally posted. The 15% coupon popped into my head before I tested it. It could have made the deal a little sweeter for those living in states with no sales tax.

I got this on a previous hot deal.

When I upgraded my Video card to include DVI (ATI - GeForce both have severel) , text was much easier to read than with an analog connection.

Refresh rate is 60 as the LCD are always on, so refresh is not an issue, much easier on the eyes.

I upgraded from a 17"CRT and now it is hard to use my sons 17"CRT, so watch out you don't get spoiled if you use more than one computer!

This is a good price on a great LCD. Planar's 3-year warranty as one of the best if that is an issue.

One point - the unit is thicker than most other LCD?s at about 3 ½? overall, the base unit takes up a little more of course. Wish I had the bucks to buy another for computer #2.

I also jumped on the last Planar deal and is extremely happy with my monitor.

I think this is a better deal since the new model supports pivotal function. I always want to do that when surfing the web. Well, maybe two years later.

BTW, DVI connection quality is much better than 15 pin, IMHO, make sure you get a DVI card if you bought this monitor.

I've got the Planar 17.4" hooked up via analog to a Geforce2 and it looks great. Just my 2 cents.

Does anyone know how this monitor compares to the KDS RAD-7 or RAD-5 (color vibrance, clarity, ...)? I've heard good things about the RADs, but didn't get in on the OM deal a while back.

laugh --

next gen lcds using Feed Forward technology *were* supposed to be ready for the year 2002 ( see article here ).

On the other hand ghosting, which is my main concern for movies and fps, seems to be an issue only for some. Read this thread for some user feedback.

Personally I'm waiting so I can buy an LCD with at worst a 13ms total average response time -- that should do 75Hz refresh with no ghosting ... someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Plus I have to figure out what to do with my 21" Viewsonic p815 -- this thing is huge & heavy ! Actually, any vid cards able to run dual monitors w/ 1 running DVI ( the lcd ), and the other running ananlog vga ( the crt ) ? should be possible ...
