Planar 42-incher

Hot or Not? Is this screen any good. I was hoping to hook it up to my ATI AIW 4mb rage card and play UT2003 on it for days on end.

Just kidding.

Is Planar a good co for plasma displays? They are decent for comp screens i think, but i dont anything about their plasma tvs.

Hopefully this is a decent deal and you will not flame me to ashes.

It seems like a good price for a widescreen plasma display but I tend to agree that the resolution limits its appeal. If you're looking for a television or home theater display, it seems rather shortsighted to pay $3k for one that can't handle all HDTV resolutions.

It also looks like this display doesn't come with a mount. You'll have to buy a stand ($187) or wall mount ($234) separately.

DLP is definitely the way to go fellas. Plasma's are getting phased out fast!

what are you talking about? dlp is a projection technology. usually they are used in front projectors but there are dlp tv's which are only slightly smaller than traditional projection tvs. theyre in a different part of the market than plasmas. but as far as this plasma, 3k is probably better spent elsewhere.

most (if not all) plasmas in this price range are 852 x 480, they are HD compatible just that they have to interpolate to fill in pixels. most people will not notice this.. the question is will it support 1080i?

Plasmas are definitely better than DLP..no comparison, but price difference is great when you start to match screen size.

Also, plasma still has wow factor.

from the DLP's i've seen they are usually 1/2 the size of a similar sized mitsubishi regular projection, and the quality is way better. DLP is a great way to go only backdraw is u cant see the image as well from the side as a plasma but the overall image is very sharp and crisp comapared to any plasma i've seen.

It does not interpolate to fill-in pixels if the resolution that it is being fed is higher that what it is capable of displaying it must throw away pixels. It probably doesn't just throw away pixels but tries to take the information of the pixels it would be throwing away and using an average to feed to the pixels it can display. This is done by a processor in the display, the cheaper ones have cheaper processors to do such things. If you look at something like this in the store and a display of higher quality you will be able to tell.

That having been, it probably will work well for people who just want to watch SDTV at 480p.

this is an EDTV. ive been researching getting plasma at avsforum, and for around 3K there is an akai plasma at costco. it comes with a wall mount. the people who have it over there have some good opinions about it too. what im thinking of getting though is the pioneer 433cmx and the pda5002 card. people have been getting it for under 4K at dell. its not on the website so u have to call them about it.

When a full HDTV plasma or LCD 42 inch screen gets to $2000 or less, that will be the sweet spot and lots of people will get off the sidelines. I don't like the fact that plasma appears to have a relatively short lifespan. I doubt if I bought a plasma screen today it would look just as good ten years from now. My current TV, a Toshiba 30 inch is over ten years old and maybe I am just lucky, but the picture is virtually identical to the day I bought it.

I think akai=samsung's OEM.

plasmas are very cool, and for $3k, you're getting a lot of cool and not too much quality. like the gateway ones or the cheaper ones at frys(since they have quite a few to compare), they usually don't look very good from what i've seen. the pixelation is always there and it just kinda bugs me to watch it.

I own a DLP projector and there's just no comparison to plasma in terms of flexibility and ability to be a drop-in replacement for a tube TV.
