The kid here was a 15 year old Eastlake Highschool student named Charles Bishop. He has been taking lessons for 2 years. No one knows exactly why he did it yet. He was supposed to be flying tonight but he got in and took off without the trainer or permission. I am a little suprised that he was not shot down since MacDill AFB is central command for operations in the Middle East. They had given him visual signals to land at Peter O'Knight airport but he did not comply.

<< Authorities identified the pilot as Charles Bishop, 15. The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. ET, at the 20th floor of the Bank of America building, a professional building at the intersection of Ashley and Kennedy Boulevard, in downtown Tampa. The building is occupied by numerous businesses, including law offices and other services. The plane was owned by National Aviation Holdings, Inc., a St. Petersburg, Fla.-based flight school. >>

Strange... A plane crashed in the parking lot of IBM headquarters in New York a few days ago, and only the local press bothered to cover it. Like this story, the damage wasn't very bad, and the pilot was the only fatality. So, why does this story get national press, and the other one was virtually ignored? Weird....

The news all states that he was given signals to land. Let me just say that flight training does't cover these intercept procedures. After 9-11 I realized that I had never, ever learned what the intercept procedures were. What the various "follow me" and "land here" blinking lights and wing wagglings were. Even after having read up on it now, I don't know if I would remember all of it.

I honestly feel sorry for this kid. It sounds like he did something extremely impulsive and has paid a serious price. I know that I've made a bad judgement decision or two in a plane, and I'm fortunate to be here and to have learned from my mistakes. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

<< Isn't there like at least one commuter plane crash every day in this country? >>

Not hardly. There isn't even 1 crash a day for the whole world.

Look here at all the crashes for 2001.

Fox News just said there was another small plane crash somewhere in Louisiana, but they didn't go into detail. This is getting silly.

Not commuters...they are people carriers.. The BAe-146/RJ holds about 70-128 passengers depending on model.

Nothing personal, but there is no way in heck that that is the entire list of all planes that crashed in 2001.

Why not? Looks like a pretty authentic site to me... maybe they didn't include the small 2 seater planes though...
