Planetside was a decent game, but I did not think very much of it as a FPS mostly due to the latency and corresponding weapon accuracy issues. Way too much reliance on random number generators for my taste and not enough emphasis on aim.

I'm sure Planetside 2 will be better due to improved technology, but I'm skeptical that it will be enough better to interest me.

Strange since it had no "hit roll" or "defense roll" of any kind. You may be referring to the fact that it was client-side hit detection, but it didn't have any numbers associated with any part of the game. The amount of missinformation about the first game in this thread is staggering.

The potential to be great is in this franchise. The first Planetside was really hurt by the inability of the tech to really keep up with the software in heavy battle environments, but it could be truly remarkable this time. The first was great, this one could become a classic if done right.

loved Planetside back "in the day" some of the battles i was a part of were "epic"
the huge scope of some of the battles were amazing. so much stuff happening over such
a large area, things flying thru the air, tracers and explosions all over. there were "battlelines" (think front lines) and you knew when you were behind the lines.

but looking over this new planet side. is it not just the same game with a more modern interface/grafix?

still tho, i will for sure have a look at this game. i hope they have updated battle damage. one of my best times was keeping my Vanguard "alive" for the longest time. Some how i kept managing to get away to repair/rearm. Tank was covered in battle damage, blast marks/bullet holes.

Isn't that really what the game needed though? Essentially the same game, with some lessons learned, using a new engine that makes use of recent technology.

Your battle damage is example is one of the perfect examples, you can do that these days.

The core of the game is sound, we don't need any optional gimmicks to make it better. Just hundreds of people fighting it out on land, sea and air in the kind of epic battles you wrote about.

Interesting news. Played planetside a long time ago. I used to love using this rocket launcher that I directed with the mouse into people's faces. However it only really was effective against tanks. Go figure.

I know its a MMOFPS, but i forgot how the org was set up. How many players per server was it at its prime?

Hundreds per faction, 3 factions. Perhaps even thousands. "Battles" would often take place with two sides starting a fight over a complex, roughly 100 or so players each side... and eventually word would spread that there a big fight (which means huge xp bonus), and more players from those two factions as well as the 3rd faction would show up.

Commonplace to see battles of anywhere between 100-500 or so players going on. Basically, they ended up implementing a "continent lock" a few months into the game after a player cap was reached on that continent to keep the servers from exploding. You'd see piles of people sitting at the transport nodes waiting for some unlucky fool to drop/crash/logoff so that they could get in.

Planetside was and still is currently the ONLY game that can truly be considered an actual MMOFPS.

No other game that I know of had both strategy and action rolled into one. I remember one night that we needed to attack back bases, drain their NTUs and disrupt the Lattice links. We take a tech plant down, the NC won't get their Vanguards. We split up into two platoons each targetting a tech plant. With 40ish soldiers we turned the tide of a conflict. The NC were forced to devote assets from the front to deal with whoever was taking their Tech plants offline. And when you're talking about 500 soldiers having to turn around and deal with 40 or so soldiers, that's a victory in my book. We may not have gotten a lot of XP, but to us it didn't matter. What mattered was the end result. And that's what was so great about Planetside. Sure, you got XP, but it was much more gratifying to go to bed seeing all the continents under Terran Republic control.

I just hope that if they do change SOMETHING, they make it so that ONE person can't go ninja bases. Sure, let em sabotage a generator or something, but it should take more people to actually CAPTURE a base than one. Even if it is undefended.

Never really had that problem. We would see a base being captured and a squad of us would go after it. Darklight scans + 2 to 3 man squads can sweep a base pretty quickly. We loved RRU (Rapid Reaction Unit) nights.
Heh, reminds me of a time we were getting a number of our bases ninja's from underneath us. It seemed some NC squad had Infiltrators w/ AI MAX certifications along with a couple advanced medics. Now that took a while to weed out. But it was fun.

I meant more geared toward the locked continents which were way on the other side of the world from where "action" was happening. One guy would go in and start capping bases while everyone was tied up elsewhere. Entire continents would turn on a single person's actions. Lame.

Ahhh, yes. Though I had a lot of fun on old school Oshur one night. Myself and two other DragonWolves thought it would be fun to shut the lights off on Oshur. One AMS and three DragonWolves took Oshur offline. It was awesome. Getting some love from the CR5s ingame saying that we were helping with the Vanu Zerg. We were the first outfit to do so.

I heard that the actual gameplay mechanics is different from original. mmm

Always get nervous when a game is announced a month before its released.

I remember the Beta and when the first PlanetSide came out. I watched some friends play it a couple of times and loved the concept, however my own computer at the time wasn't powerful enough to run it correctly.

That'd be interesting. A nice PvE sort of XP generation? I like it.

yup.

I think PvE is really a necessity part of a big MMOFPS.

You just cant always have people sitting around waiting. As as the AI isnt too stupid or too amazing, then it shouldnt be a problem
