Planetside Next - Coming March 2011...

Smedley hints that Planetside Next will be out in March.

"We have a very big launch coming in the month of March," Smedley said. "It's a big first person shooter franchise that we're really happy with."

I took a leap of logic and asked whether it was Planetside.

"Could be," Smedley said sheepishly. "We haven't technically announced it." He then told me that I could say that he "hinted" that the new Planetside was imminent, which translates to 99% of a confirmation. "This is the farthest I've gone [discussing it with the press] and the PR people are going to shoot me."

Planetside 2??? OMGWTFBBQ sauce! But seriously, why are they just going to sort of spontaneously launch it without any prior/long term development info? To me that sounds like something you would do with an MMO expansion rather than a new title. But maybe I'm just out of the loop when it comes to contemporary MMO development.

Here's to hoping it won't suck. Given SOE's recent track record, it sounds like I'll need a lot of hope because these guys just don't get it IMO.

They sent out a survey a while back asking for feedback on planetside2. It sounded like they were making a second one for sure, but I didn't think it would be this soon. Oh dear god please let it be like the last one, please don't let them make it just a bunch of instanced fights.

The PC Gaming forums has been a bunch of more-of-the-same for some time now. Only World Of Tanks (which is basically DM, but in tanks) held any spark of ingenuity to it.

Then I read this. This is good news. If it is done right, this could really drag me back into PC gaming in a serious way.

I'm not sure I understand SOE's pre-launch marketing strategy here. Are they recognizing/expecting that this game won't be as popular as other contemporary MMOs due to the fact that it is an FPS? I remember all the hype for Huxley (even though it was for naught) and am just wondering why they don't start cranking those kind of wheels.

From what I remember it was about $12 to $14/month.

Personally I think they're getting some heat from others in the community, namely Hi-Rez Studios and their acquisition of the Tribes franchise. They're supposed to be coming out with Tribes Universe, a MMO based on the Tribes Universe. From what I know it's three factions; Diamond Sword, Starwolf and Blood Eagle. I've been pretty active over there getting the scoop with the rest of my gaming clan (Clan Draconus Lupus). The co-admin of CDL runs Planetside Universe. And even he doesn't have a clue what's been happening. It caught him unaware too. He had to double check his calendar to see if it was April 1st.

I don't think I've ever played a game that had LESS spawn camping than Planetside and I've played tons of games. Not until the very end of a base "takeover" will you see much of it. A few things:

1. Mobile spawns could not only be placed anywere in any number, but they also created a cloaked bubble for you to spawn into.
2. You could spawn at the closest taken towers or even in the facility itself.
3. You could bind to a close by facility and spawn there as well.
4. In most battles I had at least 4-5 choices of spawn.
5. Most friendly towers and bases also had defenses setup (sensors, turrets and mines), we even added a defensive field to the mobile spawns.

I don't see how you could complain about a game that has so many spawn options as being full of spawn killing.

Planetside was one of those games great in concept, failed in delivery. Played the beta and just gave up because of constant annoyances.

Maybe they fixed it in PS2

I never got a chance to play planetside back in the day because i had a terrible computer and a 56k connection. I am def interested in trying it now.

I remember watching a video of a huge vent coordinated assault and was amazed.

No idea yet Minmaster. Sparse details so far. But I'm assuming it'll be the same model as all the other MMOs out there. $15/month probably.

If you want them to provide enough server clusters and internet connectivity power that there's no lag, then of course it will be.

Damn, I liked the original one. Teaming up on vehicles and fighting it out over some tower somewhere was a ton of fun. I'll buy this one if they do a decent job on delivering a good product.

Planetside was a decent game, but I did not think very much of it as a FPS mostly due to the latency and corresponding weapon accuracy issues. Way too much reliance on random number generators for my taste and not enough emphasis on aim.

I'm sure Planetside 2 will be better due to improved technology, but I'm skeptical that it will be enough better to interest me.
