I'm planning to get a new Graphic card and i'm really confused whether to get the Ati Radeon HD 5850 or the Nvidia GTX 460. Please suggest me .

Thank you in advance.

Without your target resolution, intended use, rest of PC specs I reach deep into my ass and recommend the 460, simply because it's the best bang for buck right now.

From what I have read the 460 provides approx the same performance for about $100 less. If it were me that's what I would go for. Of course it depends on other factors as specific games you want to play etc, or whether your motherboard supports crossfire, or SLI if you intend on doing that in the future.

Not really.

Newegg has a couple of 5850's for $280 after rebate, and the 1 GB GTX 460 is $230, so the difference is only $50. At stock speed the 5850 is at least 10% faster.

For running at 16x10 or below the 768MB 460 is slower than the 1GB but a great deal at $200.

Answering these questions will help others makes a recommendation:

What's your budget?
What's the specs of the rest of your system?
What resolution do you game at?
What games are you playing/looking to play?
What country are you buying in?
Are you looking for deals (rebates, cashback, etc.) or just want to purchase outright?

OP's profile does not say where they are from. In Canada the 460 is actually more than $100 cheaper:

Cheapest 5850:
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=52255&...ure=PowerColor

Cheapest 460:
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54516&...cture=Gigabyte

Ncix is always more expensive. No reason to use them as you can always pricematch lower they are not a price reference.

FYI guys, the OP is from India, so you need not worry about Canadian pricing.

Not the same story at all that 5850 is 30$ cheaper. And you are comparing it to the 768MB 460 that nobody wants.

OP. Can you give links to the 5850 and GTX460 from the vendor you intend to buy from? Or is it an actual store that you walk into? Anyway, give us the prices that are being asked for each product at the location to intend to buy from.

5850 = 298.99

460 = 199.99 for 768 and 236.99 for 1GB.

What am I missing? Were you talking about the Canadian Newegg pricing or something else?
And why would you say that nobody wants the 768 GTX460?

Obviously since all the links are from Canadian stores. What kind of dumb question is that?

Excuse me?? Dumb question?

I don't think I'm the one who said the 5850 was $30 less. Was I?

"Not the same story at all that 5850 is 30$ cheaper."

Huh. I even gave you the benefit of the doubt that it "wasn't" the canadian links.

Right, anyway.

onetwo27, tell us your system specs and resolution for your monitor. The 1GB GTX 460 is recommended. But if you game at below 1680x1050, you could surely get away from the 768MB version for less money. If you game above 1680x1050, get the 1GB for sure. If you game exactly at that resolution you could get either, but might as well get the 1GB unless you really want to save money.

The Radeon 5850 usually outperforms the GTX 460, but not by substantial amounts. If your budget allows it you could get the 5850 and generally see better performance, but it's of questionable value. The 5850 is usually at least 20% more expensive than the GTX 460 1GB, but the consensus appears to be that it's only 10% faster on average (correct me if I am wrong). So you get more performance per dollar on the 460 - and thus it is the recommended buy. The extra price difference can get you a couple PC games after all.

I just got finished asking you if you were talking about the Canadian NEWEGG links.
You say, what kind of dumb question is that?
Then produce a NCIX link.
You may just want to back up a bit and calm down.

Somebody needs to read the thread again because those links were already in the thread and they were the links I was discussing. I did not "produce" any links.

I said Canadian newegg links, or something else. Apparently it was something else. Thanks for trying to make the conversation go nice and smoothly. Good grief.

Anyway. To the OP, post those prices from where you intend to buy.
Without seeing those prices, I'd lean towards the GTX460 1GB depending on the resolution you play on. If 16x10 or less, I'd say the 768 would be fine.

You know outside the obvious the thing that I hate the most about you is that it's really difficult to argue with people who can't read.

Maybe you should stop editing your posts to make yourself look better(I was going to put less retarded but.. oops I did).

Oh and a tip you still have a /size tag in your sig even though its not small anymore... so we can all see that your a focus group member more easily. You probably want to fix that before some of the new posters around here read your sig or something.

I went back and viewed every one of the post edits (I can see what they were before editing.) The edits were trivial. However, the offense of calling other posters "retarded" isn't taken trivially in the technical forums. You have PM. - Admin DrPizza

Also I want to point out that you are suggesting that he buy an nV card without having full details about his situation. That is fine and of course you are entitled to your opinion but the problem here is that had the situation been reversed(in terms of who makes the cards) would you be suggesting an ATi card? I want everyone on the forum to think long and hard about that one because really that is the issue.

I mean what would be the consequences to your status if you started suggesting that people buy the competition? It's obvious you can't do that.

Ok i'm from India. The cost here for the GTX 460 is Rs.15000 approx. and the 5850 is Rs.16500. 1$ = approx. Rs.46

Over here there's a whole street full of shops selling the same peripherals :\.

But this where i usually buy - http://www.deltapage.com/

Is that 460 the 768MB or the 1GB model? If it's the 1GB, then the price seems to be right in line with performance compared to the 5850.

460 = @ 330.00 (Rs.15000) and the 5850 = @ 360.00 (Rs.16500)

The 5850 is on average 8% faster than the GTX460 1GB and costs 8% more.

If it's the 768 model, then it is overpriced and would go with the 5850.
