I'm going with one of my buddies to Washington DC for about 3 days at the end of December. Neither of us has been there before. We're interested in seeing the important monuments and buildings, as well as checking out some museums.

What are some must-see attractions we should include on our itinerary?

Well just make sure to put the dish from the Lunar II on top the Washington monument so that three-dog can broadcast his radio station to a wider audience. Fight the good fight!

And if you meet any super mutants, run.

in addition to blackdogdeek's suggestions, you need to see:

national archives (original copies of the declaration of independence and constitution)
wwii memorial
vietnam veterans memorial
korean war memorial

If you like aircraft and spaceflight, there is the National Air & Space Museum.

The Air and Space Museum out at Dulles airport is much better than the one downtown, but it's a haul to get there from downtown.

I can't believe nobody said the Jefferson Memorial. It's one of the best. From there, go to the FDR memorial, which is often overlooked but excellent. If you want to get away from monuments for a bit, go to Georgetown and poke around. And don't just go on M and Wisconsin streets, you'll miss a lot.

Old Town Alexandria is another place that is similar to Georgetown and is a lot of fun.

Go to the National Gallery.

Check out the Marine Corp Memorial (Iwo Jima) across the river in Rosslyn. Also go to the Air Force Memorial near the Pentagon. And you definitely need to spend time at Arlington Cemetery.

Chinatown and U street are two fun neighborhoods to look around in.

You have to see the Vietnam Wall and the Lincoln Memorial, mainly. The latter isn't just an amazing memorial, but it provides a great view. And the former is really quite heart-breaking when you see it.

My character was definitely not strong enough to run through there when I first tried.

Thanks for the replies guys. We're running into some difficulties finding cheap means of transportation from Toronto to Washington DC. Flight will run us about $350 USD per person. Amtrak and Greyhound take waaaaay too long. And driving may be too dangerous in the winter. Any other suggestions?

I know I'm not contributing much here, but when we take cabs home from the city back to Arlington, we usually end up going past it and always start singing, "America, FUCK YEAH!" Hence, I would also recommend the Iwo Jima Memorial, possibly after a night out on U Street or in Adams Morgan (if you're coming from out of town, might as well see the shit show that is AM).

I'd say plan to stay in DC for a week. Maybe do a few nights in the city, then relocate to a hotel in Arlington to save a few $.

There's a LOT to see and do here.
