well, these guys are digging themselves deeper and deeper, a couple more promises and OfficeDepot will have no choice...

but, why the heck should Linksys have to pay for OfficeDepot's mistake?

i think that email is just a way to put off having to refund $100 right now.

And, you know as well anyone else, that CSRs can be incredibly clueless as well. Howeve, you are right, that OD is digging itself a deeper hole.

The CSR's statement could be very helpful if needed. I think agency law and apparent authority may be a useful concept for the future.

Maybe OD will reimburse Linksys for the money paid out. That would be my best guess. OD is in a tough spot. With some of the shelf tags being displayed saying free after rebate, I don't think there is much they can do but eat the losses. The shelf tag kind of sets a precedent as being advertised, and I don't think they could arbitrarily decide one rebate will be honored because it was sold at a store that had a shelf tag out saying free after rebate, and deny another rebate because they didn't have the free after rebate shelf tag displayed...

They'll be eating some possibly big losses if people ordered online and sent in the rebate forms from B&M purchases. I bet they will be very relieved once the 13th rolls around.

a guy <NOT ME> on wallet-that is-fat got an call from a regional manager promising a free router (after he filed a BBB complaint. I assuming by posting it there, he wont mind it being here too:

<<
I just forwarded them my complaint to the BBB.... I'll take out stuff for general info only:

Complaint #: 530606
Complaint Type: General Complaint (not a car maker)
Date Received: 1/9/2002
Primary Complaint Classification: Advertising Issues
Secondary Complaint Classification: Selling Practices
Complaint:
Have a printout of a "As Advertised" Linksys router (Office Depot # 375-031) that Office Depot advertised for $99.99 with $110.00 in mail-in rebates (one $100 and one $10). Went on January 8th, and have a copy of the store tag stating this. Went in on January 9th, and attempted to purchase the said item. When purchased, only $20 in rebates printed out. Cashier asked manager XXXXX XXXXX, and manager stated there was a pricing error, even though I had said printout from January 8th stating that there were $110.00 in mail-in rebates and not $20. I also have a copy of said $100 'rebate' in my possession that says it is good until "01/12/02."

Desired Settlement: Other (requires explanation)
Settlement Explanation:
I want the item for $99.99 and I want the $110 in mail in rebates, OR I would be willing to pay $10 for the item after the store took the $100 rebate off and applied tax (If the rebate is now unavailable). I want what the copy of the shelf tag that I have says ("As Advertised, $99.99 - $110.00 mail in rebates = FREE! after rebates).

I also have the image hosted on my server, so if the other servers don't work then you can go to mine. Please only use my server if the other ones work because my ISP doesn't allow me to run a server, and I don't want them to get suspicious. Thanks.

Also, the server is offline at night (about 8:30PM PST to around 9:30 AM PST).

People,

You need to take action, send out your complaint to this fraud OD advertisement. Waiting is not solution.

I sent out two totally different styles complaint emails already in two accounts. One is plain, another is formal. OD replied the FORMAL one only. It hints the OD will only care a serious complaint. If you don't complaint, you may lose your right.

Isn't this a second of two issues? One is whether Linksys will honor the rebate. The second is whether you can purchase the router at the advertised price when only the lower rebate amounts are printing out.

Can't complain yet about the first issue for however long it takes Linksys to ding the rebate (if they do). I think they (Linksys) will ask OD to reimburse them and not piss off customers. Dunno, maybe that's wishful thinking.

I got one of them. I don't quite understand how to send to both. On the receipt coupon, I only got one address to Mesa, AZ. I understand it to be the $100 rebate. How about the other one? Thanks for the help.

You should have gotten an OD rebate printout for $10.00 as well. You can get that from the website.

Hey Phikhue,

Which Dallas store did you get your instant refund at? I bought one of
these in Austin yesterday (since Dallas stores seemed to be out
of stock and I was in Austin on business anyway). The clerk told me
that the $100 rebate was a mistake and then tried to take away
the rebate form and replace it with the web rebate form. I managed
to keep my $100 one and was planning on sending them in, but if
I can get it on the spot I will feel better. Think the fact that I bought it
at one store and approach a different one for the refund will be a
problem? Am I better off mailing in the rebate form and filing complaints
later if there is an issue?

I called Ken Worsham (OD Corp) today and he said that Linksys will not honor the $100 rebate and that OD Corp is trying to work out a solution-- that they should have one by tomorow

call him up and get on the list --- see above posts for number

Do we need to call Ken or would a professionally worded e-mail
be sufficient to "get on the list"?

leonc,
I don't want to kill future deal so forgive me for not giving you the store's location. I don't think you have much chance since you bought it from another store anyway. Here's my story posted on another board:
I came to the store with all the copies (receipt, upc, rebate forms, self tag) and told the manager:
I bought the Router on Tuesday when noticing the self tag $99.99 - $110 = free. Told a friend and he bought one today but only 2 $10 rebate forms came out. He asked around and found out the rebate was indeed $10. I am here to find out if the $100 rebate is ligitimate. Will I get $100 or $10 from Linksys? Will they just deny my rebate completely because they don't offer any $100 rebate?
Took sometime for the manager to check. She came back and said that the rebate is $10 but she would honor her store's self tag and give me the credit. She even gave me her business card in case I don't get my $10 rebate from Linksys.

Someone from the "wallet that is chubby" forum said that they spoke to Ken at OD and that Linksys WILL HONOR the $100 rebate. Take that for what its worth.

I saw that post and then called Ken Worsham as well, and got the reply that they will in fact honor the rebate. Hats off to Office Depot for honoring this. I think we should remember this willingness to satisfy the customer when making your next purchase of office products. Office Depot has always treated me better than either Staples or Office Max.

that would be cool, but unlikely, simply because they have already refunded people, so those people would get a refund, and the rebate!

we shall see, i sent an email yesterday, and have yet to hear a thing, i guess i will just hit up OD tomorrow and see what they have to say about the whole thing. It would be nice to have a decision either way....

edit: ok well i am glad it is true, and i'm glad i ordered another one online . If they really honor it, what is to stop people from buying more till the 12th? And i guess those that already got refunded just made another $100 if they choose to.

Only people who are aware of the problem and have a copy of the rebate slip will be able to make additional purchases. They're probably just biting the bullet on it. And, they'll probably bite the bullet on double rebates as well.

Is it true? Have you confirmed as well. It sure looks like it's shaping up that way. I have an Email in as well.

I already got 6 and have run out of reliable addresses.

I am sure Office Depot will be looking closely at the dates of purchase, and only honoring those purchased on the 7th and 8th, when the $100 rebate was actually offered. I don't think the date on the shelf tag would matter (Good through the 12th) as long as the shelf tag was pulled, as it was never advertised outside of the store.

I think the stores that did the refund probably took the rebate slips back.
