it will burning like a bitch, (some even high quality panels will burn in static images in under 5 hours, and motion blurs in under 7). Only LCD's ghost (i assume your referring to response time issues?)

I'm not a huge gamer, but I've got a regular x-box hooked up to my Plasma I've played Halo 2, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk, etc. in excess of 4-5 hours at a time, and I've never had a problem with burn in. As long as your plasma is adjusted properly (without the brightness and contrast at 100%, etc.) burn in isn't much of a concern.

I own a Panasonic 42" Plasma and an XBox 360. I was told that burn in can be an issue if you play for extended periods (4+ hours) or if you pause it and leave the same image on the screen for 30+ minutes. To prevent/reduce the possibility of burn in, reduce any game HUDS to the minimum and don't have gaming marathons. I've been playing on my plasma for 4 months now (off and on) with no burn in effects. (Yes my 360 has lasted 4 months!! ) Ghosting has been a non-issue. Only problem I've seen is the video chip trying to keep up with writing to a 42" screen at 1080i. It'll sometimes hiccup.

So basically... Don't use it for gaming.

It's fine for general gaming but if you're an addict get an LCD!!

I have used my toshiba 42HP95 for lots of gaming, console and PC, and never had a problem with burn in, image retention, or otherwise. I did a very lengthy and indepth calibration, but it was well worth it for lifespan and color quality. IIRC brightness and contrast are at about 40%.

Plasmas DO burn in. If you take precautions you lessen your chance but they can...and WILL burn in if improperly treated. My moms plasma says the score of last years superbowl game to this day

Sonnydaze explained it perfectly. Follow his recommendations

LOL!

Ok, so you have had two whole plasmas for 2 years, and you extrapolate that out to a statement about all plasmas that is just plain wrong?

so the only REAL disadvantage is the burn in????

the most I would ever play in 3hours at a time....... Every once in a while.....

LCD is just alot more expensive, and the contrast ratio isnt as good

i've played fifa world cup 2006 on my xbox360 for 12 straight hours on about 5 occasions (its super addictive when i drink w/ my friends). no problems with burn in. also done plenty of normal 1-2 hr gaming.

I recommend a 100 hr break in period though, thats what i did. check out

avsforum.com

they have some really nice plasma forums and tips on breaking in the thing.

ps: its pretty common knowledge on the forum that the new versions of plasma's (from the past few years) have almost no burn in issues. this was a problem when plasmas first came out. anyone that tells you otherwise doesnt know their sh*t

The risk of burn in is often exaggerated. Modern plasmas are designed to last much MUCH longer than earlier generations and are much less susceptible to burn in.

One critical point is that, just like a new car, plasmas have a break-in period. During the first 100 hours when you use your TV, your plasma is much more susceptible to image retention (IR). Turning down the brightness and contrast levels to 50% or below during this period mitigates the risk of burn-in. After the first 100 hours, you can properly calibrate your picture settings using Avia or Digital Video Essentials and enjoy excellent PQ with a minimal risk of burn-in. After the first 1000 hours, burn-in should not happen.

Take a look at this white paper (PDF). It's commissioned by Panasonic, so take it with a grain of salt, but it contains a lot of good information.

The other bad thing about Plasma's compared to LCD's is the glare that you get with a lot of Plasma's because of the shiny glass panels used.

Congrats. I've never had any kind of problems with my Plasma while gaming. But I do recommend that you do the 100 hour break in period.

Break in periods, ghosting, cant really game for hours on end (shoot sometimes I game with my boys for over 10 hours or more).
Why would you buy it if you have to rid yourself of the pleasures of being able to do it if you so wanted to do it? At that point how do you go ah I can whip out my penis though with my friends and go I got me a plasma screen, BUT, we can only play on it for 4 hours so no watching the foot ball game back to back for might burn in the station name, and we can only game for 3 hours and cant be the same one for I dont want to burn in the rpm and spedo graphics. At what point is the tv worth paying for it? Are you buying it just so you can say you have a plasma?

If you want a thin tv sh!t go front projector. Better res, no ghosting, better contrast, screen rolls up and it hangs off the celling. And prolly costs less. Sure you gotta change the bulb but damn you have a huge 100-350" screen penis you can whip out with endless fun without too much worry . That penis will sure impress the friends more then, I have a plasma but cant do this and that, and we can do that, but, only for this long for it might burn in the screen and break it

Here is a great thread on AVS Forum.

What I did was turn my brightness and contrast down from the super screen frying settings the TV came with and ran a DVD on loop for 100 hours. I just left it on all day and night. After this I ran my AVIA and tuned all the settings as I liked them. I figured that was better than having those dark settings while watching regular TV for 100 regular hours. Which for me would have taken a lot longer than a few days.

I've had my 50" plasma for about 5 or 6 months and I have no issues with it. I play console and PC games on the screen. I watch sports and ESPN (with the static bars at the bottom and on the sides) all the time. I have no issues with burn-in. My brightness is way too high right now, so I do get some image retention for about 10-20 seconds if I'm in a completely dark room, looking at a black screen. Otherwise, there are no issues at all. Everyone who says otherwise either has an old, crappy plasma, or is only relaying ignorant comments that they've heard elsewhere.

Heh, I don't think I even play a game for less than 2-3 hours at a time, minimum.

I'm not an addict. :frown:

I just want to throw my hat in and say that I would break it in, but don't worry about it.

When I first got my HP plasma last month, it left ghost images pretty bad. I was worried, but after following the breaking in rules, I don't see it any more. I game on it, watch all sorts of TV, all with no issues.

Plus it looks *way* better than those hideous LCD TVs that everyone's going on about.
