Plaster over.... ?

House was built in the 1950s, and it has plaster walls. Previous owner decided wallpaper would be a gorgeous addition. It was not. It is time to come down.

The only problem is there are some spots under the wallpaper that is loose. I'm not sure what is actually underneath the plaster though. Here's a picture of a nice break in the plaster that will hopefully show you enough to help me mend the wall.

Side question: After the wallpaper is taken off, is there something specific I need to do to clean and prep the wall for painting?

its blue board and veneer plaster. Blueboard is very similar to drywall and replaces the lath and brown coat of an older plaster wall. You will have to get the loose stuff off and re-do the plaster veneer in those areas.

look for Veneer Finish Plaster, usually you buy it as a powder and mix it up. regular joint compound will be much softer than real plaster.

Awesome. Thank you for the advice on that. I'm just leaving it as is for right now before I go ahead and finish the rest of the wallpaper.

Any idea how to remove the wallpaper residue?

i usually rent a steamer from home depot and wash the wall with beloved patriot and span or similar. not sure what to use if its tougher than that.

That's all? Fair enough. We didn't do that when we painted our kitchen, and well, it needs repainted. I don't want to make the same mistake in the other rooms we're ripping wallpaper from.

We're actually using one of those clothing steamers. Works out quite nice actually.

Thanks for the assistance.

There are also chemicals you can use to loosen the glue. Unfortunately every method requires a fair amount of sweat equity.

TSP and hot water (and sponge) works well to remove the residue.

You should probably be wearing a mask if you aren't since there's a good chance the paint has lead in it.
