I think it would just offer more headroom if the voltage needed to be pushed because an unstable kit or going for a lower CL or going for a higher speed. That 8$ is worth having those type options to me and i don't necessarily have to use it in the Sandybrige build.

Well thank god I didn't buy Sandy Bridge, LOL

I just realized I wasn't looking at a 3.3Ghz i7 9xx chip vs the i5 2500K chip - LOL!!! F that, there is no way I am buying that. When comparing the two they are very similar in Anands benches.

Whew

I am confused... SB is generally 30% faster then anything else at it's clockspeed and the i5 OC's to 4.4Ghz on air a feat not many other CPU's can claim.

I just got done looking at a i7 975 3.3Ghz vs the 2500K 3.3Ghz - they are VERY similar in performance. So basically I am looking at it in a different light and we don't have the same interests from a chip in this scenario. From my perspective and not in the interest of a machine for my brother, if I took my i7 920 to 3.3Ghz, which in the case of my game rig ~ 3.49Ghz, I am getting basically the same performance. Now reverse those clock speeds and then look at the average ipc of a 3Ghz i7 9xx vs a Q9650 = no, not a sandybrige but a 3Ghz SB is still in the average same boat.

I thought these were a wow type of something but I overlooked the clock speeds, and from my perspective I am running 2 i7 920s so it didn't make me think of a comparison of the same Ghz speeds.

Now I think I am just going to invest in a decent case, psu, and maybe an SSD, and call it a day.

Considering the Corsair 650D although I don't know how careful he'll be with an open exhaust vent on this case but i'll ask where he'll be storing it.

The PSU, I might go with the 430w Seasonic

SSD will be a small something

Thanks for all your help fellas,

Cheers

But you can raise the SB up to 4.4 Ghz which will then crush anything, including the i7-975 in all the most heavily threaded tasks. and for only $220

the i5 wins in every test that isnt highly threaded. And even highly threaded tasks the i5 isnt far behind, and for $800 less? Im sorry the i5 wins.

The first test that is not the overall Syn bench the i5 2500k beats the i7 975 by 2 seconds. You want to spend Three Hundred and Eight dollars, 380$ to save 2 seconds? LOL go win with the i5

EDIT: nm, 1.8 seconds

If you already have the i7-975 then no it isnt worth it. But it isnt worth getting the i7-975 at this point INSTEAD of the i5-2500k. Not to mention the i7-975 is $1000

I'm sorry, I went a little too far.. i just don't think there is much of a difference in clock cycle performance judging from those benches.

Well the i7-970, 975, 980, and 990x are all 32nm like Sandy Bridge, the lower i7's (920-960) are 45nm and show a bigger clock per clock difference. (still not large) just remember however Sandy Bridge is NOT the replacement of 1366 it is the replacement of 1156, the replacement of 1366 is socket 2011 later this year/early next year.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited to see these chips hitting 4.4-4.6Ghz but in the case for my brother, it really doesn't critically apply. He is not an enthusiast like us, just a money thinker who is not afraid of a little hard labor to say the least, hehe.

So after some struggling of some ideas, I finally got a sense of what to do after talking with my brother and I believe I went with the right route. I painfully decided to give up my Q9650 platform - Q9650, Asus P5Q Premium, 8G Gskill DDR2 900 CL4, & HD 5770 ...I threw in my old Lian Li PC 60 (first case) and bought some extra parts = Seasonic X 400w & a 80g Vertex 2

What I can't believe is this:

The specs with this type of idle watts include only the mentioned parts above + 1 TRUE & 120mm fan. I'm not sure but I think when I had my Enermax 950w running this rig, the lowest idle was around 115w + a few 120mm fans.

Yep, being in the sweet spot on a PSU's efficiency curve (by buying an appropriately-sized one) can make a large difference!
