I don't want to get into the DLP vs. LCD thing.

I am interested in the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 730HD seeing that this projector is 720p, what happens when I connect my Blu-Ray player to it and play a Blu-Ray movie which of course is 1080p?

I really like the specs on the projector, especially 3000 Lumens because I want to use it outdoors on a 144" Diagonal Screen.

Thanks!

not sure exactly what you are asking. it's going to play it at 720p since that is what your projector can display. just like if you hooked up a bluray player to an old non-hd CRT tv it will play it at 480i/p.

Also depends on your screen size, if you are going 100" or more the picture quality will suffer

I guess I just wanted to make sure the entire movie would be displayed and nothing would get cut-off.

Yes...I am wanting to go 144" Diag.

Perhaps I will look around for a 1080p projector, but it seems most of them are DLP and I wanted to avoid the possible rainbow effect.

Not entirely true. It is a factor of the size of the screen and the viewing distance from the screen (really angular resolution). If you are 300 feet from that 100" screen, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference of 4k vs 1080p vs 480p....

But at say 8 feet, yes, you most definitely would tell the difference, and would want to get as high a resolution as you could get, especially at 144 inches diagonal. In fact, at 144inches, even at 8 feet from the screen, I would say 1080p would even start to look "blocky" (as 1080p resolution assuming 16:9 aspect ratio puts the pixels at just over 3x the size of human eye's angular resolution with 20/20 vision). If you are closer than 8 feet from the screen, it will be even more pronounced. So get the highest resolution you can afford.

Thank you for the info.

Wow...even with a 1080p projector 144" would look blocky?!? How about 120"?

People will be sitting I would guess 10' and farther in the grass and patio.

I used to do 1080p@135" or so, 12 feet and it was plenty good. Sure, I'm very excited for 4k, but don't think for a second that it wont look good at 1080p. But if you're at 100+, I would DEFINITELY go 1080p.

Thank you...I guess I will have to bump up the budget and go 1080p.

Not sure what your budget is, but if you can get around upper 600's, this guy would be legit for outdoors:

That is within my budget, the only thing that bothers me about this projector is that the Optoma HD26 has a 2x Color Wheel that is more susceptible to the Rainbow Effect.

I was looking at the BenQ W1070 which has a 6x Color Wheel (less chance of rainbow effect) but "only" 2000 Lumens.

Yeah, good point. I've only had LCD projectors, so I'm not sure how suspeptible it really is. My Panasonic PT-AR100u is solid and would fit the bill for you, but its getting a little old, and its a bit more expensive.

My current screen is 120" with a 720p LED projector & it looks great (in a small room, too).

Just get the BenQ W1070. It's great for the $$$.

Just for clarity the 730HD won't show any pixelation until you get about 5 feet on a 92 inch screen. Sitting at 10 feet back it just looks like a movie theater.

100 to 200 inch is better for outdoors and the extra lumens is nice.

Also the bulb is cheaper at $99 when a replacement is necessary. Something people don't think about.
