was wondering how many of you play a musical intrument or sing or involved with music. Who or what inspries you? Ever used to play? Do you miss it?

I used to play alot of classical piano when I was younger. Also played alto sax. Stopped a while ago. Now I mainly play guitar and normal drums and sing. I also have some hand made african drums I mess with. I also spin and mix and build beats.

I have a large set of Tamas with octobons and a Guild acoustic guitar and an Ibanez electric guitar. Also have little stuff around too like 2 harmonicas and a wooden recorder from south america. My musical influences go from classical Bach, to Tribe called Quest and De La Soul style hip hop, Coltrane and miles type Jazz, to the Beatles. The Roots really inspire me too but thats kind of a biased cuz I hang out with them. Ever since I started playing acoustic guitar I discovered the brilliance of the Beatles. I think I own every album now and at least 7-8 different sheet music books. I'm also very inspired by off the beaten path musicians too like Trent Reznor, Leonard Cohen, John Coltrane, early Miles Davis, etc.

btw I'd like to add that one important part of this thread was also to make you think about playing an old instrument again. I played piano and was forced to practive 2 hour every day. I was very busy with sports and by the time I got home I dreaded playng piano. Now I miss it to death but to get a piano in my apartment would require knocking down a wall. I have been looking at some nice digital painos and synths for a while now. I think I may get a Roland XP (used of course). It will go well with my Audigy and making beats too.

so enough about me. What musically inspires you to play and play what?

I played the trumpet for around three months when I was 10. Long enough to determine that I didn't like it and to make an impression on my instructor.

I met up with years later. "I remember you from when you were learning the trumpet. Man, were you bad."

played the clarinet up til and including my freshman year of college...played the piano for a while, but quit, even tho I shouldn't have.

I miss the clarinet sooooo much...whenever I hear a good classical piece, I get all sad since I stopped playing.

damn you, digging up all these memories and emotions.

Guitar and Saxaphone. I barely play the sax anymore, but I try to get in a few guitar hours each week.

I played the alto sax for a few years, gave it up when the teacher I had completely ruined me on the idea.

Now I spin electronic music and some hip hop.
<--- two turntables, no microphone, but a mixer baby yeah

I wish I could really play!

I am at an intermediate level with the piano. And the piano is my favourite musical instrument. I love classical piano music.

At the moment, I'm afraid I'm way better with music theory than I am with music practice. I hope to improve on my skills some day, when I stop procrastinating! Then I could really apply my music theory skills.

Guitar and alto sax. I play alto sax in band, don't really enjoy it but it's an easy A.

Guitar on the other hand I practice at least an hour a day, two hours or more if I'm not busy.

yea ok he deserves a beating gimme his name and address.

Don't let a$$holes like this discourage you. Music not about playing for others. Its about playing for YOU. I sincerely hope you try again. Listen To some early Miles Davis. Listen. Here it? Here the solitude of some of his best work? Its about him and his horn. Not his teacher, not a reviewer, not a fan.

cheers

Biggest issue with theory or concepts or writing, works much better when you dont have to think about your instrumental skills and can concentrate on the music. Keep at it!

I haven't played in a couple of years, but I played trumpet for 7 years in elementary, middle school, and high school. I really should get it out one of these days and play it some. If nothing, it could probably stand to be cleaned to keep it in good condition.

Edit: MeanMeosh: Baritone? Also known as a euphonium, right? I played baritone as an experimental type thing in summer band in middle school. Went back to my trumpet

I took Piano for seven years. (Yeah, not as good as I should be tho, cuz I didn't practice as much as I should have.)

And I took Guitar for a few months, then as a class in School. But I'm going to take that up again VERY soon. Classical Guitar tho, not the regular. I LOVE the sound of classical guitar. To play the Spanish sound, is something I've wanted to do really bad.

You hang out with the Roots? Sweet! They are my favorite hip-hop group (well, J5 and Blackalicious are up there) and their latest LP is fantastic.

I'm definitely one of those people with music coursing through my veins. I played a few instruments growing up--6 years on the piano and played Clarinet in grade school and tenor sax throughout JHS and HS. Then, when I got to college I just stopped playing--not sure why. Got too involved in other pursuits. I still listened to lots of stuff, but as far as playing--nada.

About nine months ago I got a wild hair up my ass and bought an acoustic guitar--a Seagull S6+ Cutaway in Tobacco Burst (named Joey) . It was a love affair from the start. Not one to start small I decided the first song I'd learn was Scarborough Fair (Simon & Garfunkel--I'm a huge fan). It took a long time to learn the fingerpicking but I love that song and was very determined! After a few weeks of regular practice (pretty much daily) I had it down pat. I was amazed that my fingers could learn to go in the right places and do it every time I played. Thanks to my newly-formed callouses, it no longer hurt to play and the guitar sounded great. After I learned that song I was positively hooked... I have about 20 songs in my repertoire (mainly fingerpicked folk, folk/rock, singer-songwriter stuff) and learning more all of the time. I would say my biggest influences guitar-wise are S&G and mainly Nick Drake--I am in love with his music and never tire of listening to it. I presently can play five Drake songs (most recently Northern Sky) and enjoy the paradox of how simple they sound yet how complex they are. I'm no longer afraid of alternate tunings (thanks to Drake) and actually I really like how some of them sound. Like you I'm also a huge Beatles fan and enjoy learning lots of their songs (I try to balance Macca tunes with Lennon tunes).

These days I would rather chill with the guitar than sit in front of the computer. I am amazed at the progress I've made in such a short period of time. I am even more amazed at how soothing it is to play--at how much better I feel about...everything because I am again playing music--I can't believe I went six years of my life without it.

Unfortunately, most of my hobbies are expensive ones. I long to have a "studio" with good Mics, Mixer, Keyboard, and other instruments, but I'm sure some of that will come in time. For now though, I have my Joey and I love her . In a fire I think that's the first thing I'd grab, not due to any monetary reason (as far as guitars go it's pretty cheap!) but more because it represents my return to playing music--and even with so little hindsight I see that day last August as a very important turning-point in my life.

I guess it all sounds a little sappy, but music is just one of those things for me. More and more I feel like I was meant to make music, and I don't think that entails anything commercial... even just playing for family and friends. Conveying emotion and feeling through music--it doesn't get any better than that for me!

Thanks for starting the thread!

P.S. I lust after grand pianos.... someday when I have room and $$ I will buy one...
