Yanno I never gave much thought to the flute. Just thought it was some thing the girls in the marching band played
I have a friend that plays this great heavy old raspy flute. He plays with jazz and classic rock influences. I started jamming with him doing mainly classic rock style music and a little jazz (though I can't cut it as a real jazz guitarist). The sound of that flute is so amazing though. I am in love with that sound. I let him solo and lead all the time. He goes all over the scales yet always comes back in and it sounds AWESOME. I started introducing him to some bands and now he's constantly jamming with like half a dozen rock/alt/jazz bands.
It's such a great new dynamic for a guitar/bass/drum band.

I play guitar. Been playing for 15 years. Got my first guitar on my 13th birthday, and I'm 28 now. I've been in several bands, but not in the past 5 years.

I played sax in high school. My band leader persuaded me to play the baritone sax, and I did quite well at it. I would get perfect scores and praise from judges at state competitions. One judge was a university band leader, who told me he could probably get me a scholarship if I majored in music. It was tempting, but music isn't the most lucrative major. So I denied my love of music, and became an engineer instead.

My inspiration for guitar is a guy named Paul Gilbert. He quit high school at 16, and got accepted to GIT, the Guitar Institute of Technology, a prestigious guitar school in LA. He excelled so well, that he was teaching there at 18. He started a band called Racer X, which was a bunch of musical (metal) virtuosos. There music was so technical, so fast, and played perfectly. He then left Racer X to join Mr. Big (yes, of "To Be With You" fame), and now his career has pretty much gone down the toilet.

If you like fast guitar (and I mean FAST), download some Paul Gilbert instructional video clips off Kazaa. It will blow you away!

I play the tuba, been playing it for 8 1/2 years. It's my major here at college. I can also play euphonium, french horn (sorta), trombone (slowly), piano and accordion. I couldn't live without my instruments.

I've always wondered - can you really make a living with a music performance degree?

Yeah, the name "performance" degree is a little deceptive, cause guess what you probably do with it? Teach. Thing is, if you want to teach at a higher level (i.e. at a college somewhere) you need a performance degree. Incidentally, you also perform quite a bit while on faculty wherever you teach. If you want to teach in a K-12 setting, you go with music Education (which I haven't completely ruled out either, but I'd like to go for the performance degree, I hope to teach at the college level one day).

I play alto sax in my band. I played guitar for a time, remember some of it, like the basic chords. Used to play piano, I was fairly good, and I still know enough to play my parts for when I sing for choir...

I play drums so what do you think?

I say Booo! to any instrument that collects dust. Part of the point of this thread.

I played clarinet in middle/high school for concert band and alto sax for jazz/marching band. Played in the pep band in college on alto for two years. I still play a little bit every now and then, but just on my own at home.

seriously I really appreciate it. I tend to be a bit technical in my approach with my musical equipment. I want my cymbal resonance just right, my drum heads tuned right, the right type of sticks, and to hear about different methods, etc. I find it's cool to talk with other drummers about it but talking to a few people here and there only gets you so much feedback. Drummers are pretty particular about that stuff though, I guess it has alot to do with the nature of the instrument too. Attention to detail is critical in drumming IMO. It's really cool to see a large forum of people talking about the same stuff.

If anyone else knows of some good forums for other types of music and playing, please link!

If you're into custom drums like OCDP, there are some guys over there with tons of knowledge about that. There is also an individual that is pretty close to a company called BigBoy drums, who do custom drums. neat stuff. probably see you there... (handle is drumstud)
it would be good to see as many drummers as possible over there!
