Sony's PlayStation 3 is due to drop November 17th this month. Hitting the stores in two flavors, a Core system at $499. It includes a 20GB HD (upgradable), HDMI, Bluetooth wireless controllers and the much acclaimed Blue-ray. The Premium system to retail at $599, adds a silver exterior trim, WiFi and flash card readers for the picture buffs. More spec's can be found here.

Then you have to figure in games at $60 a pop. Two of the most intrueging games to me are, Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 3. Check out the HD video of each and the screen shots. Both of which are breathtaking in graphical quality. Altho there are some games that really look ugly (atleast from the pics). Here is an example. Jaggies all over the place

All preorders are taken and only a select few will get one on launch day. Those lucky few, would have spent many hours waiting to retrieve thier prized possession. Some will end up on E-bay selling for thousands and others will keep it.

To all those who end up with a Play Station 3, my hats off to you. Too expensive for me. After adding an HDTV, I would have to spend as much as I did on my PC. Thats just not going to happen anytime soon.

Sony PlayStation 3 is the first console I've been interested in for over 5 years. I will end up with one, but long after the rush.

I think its a great system. Its definately got a lot potiential, but honestly . . . its priced pretty far beyond a lot of other console price ranges.

I don't swing anymore toward PS3, XBox, or WII. I mostly look at what kinds of games apeal to me. As it stands, I love the franchises PS3 has (Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, etc) but its just priced to high. Like many other rabid PS2 fans, money will be large deciding factor in picking out a console.

PC gamers are such "jaggies" snobs sometimes it makes me sick. So what if the game looks 10 times better!? Second/third gen games will take full advantage of that 1920X1080 res, and jaggies will be inevitable on HDTV's, which are frequently 2-3 times larger than a PC monitor.

My quick take on PS3 (off the top of my tired head):

-Expensive at $599, but excellent value as a very-early adoption to BlueRay movie player. Cheaper than a standalone player at the moment
-1080p support via HDMI will make it the best looking console out there (graphics wise), especially when the Japanese developers really get going!
-1st gen hardware will probably have problems - it may overheat at times (see: E3), it could very well develop laser read problems down the line (see: PS1 launch systems; PS2 launch systems). So buy extended warranty on this one (bite the bullet -this one will be worth it!)

-Games will be great b/c good developers are onboard. However, it's almost the exact same situation as last gen, with Konami, Capcom, SquareEnix, etc. If you like what was on the PS2, espect better looking sequels on the PS3 (Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, new Gran Turismos, new God of War, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.). They may as well call it the "sequel machine."
-Tilt controller looks kinda gimmicky. It's basically just a Dual Shock from PS1 days with some added functionality. Still an excellent controller, but this is why Wii is so innovative - because nobody else has the cojones to "lead" other than sticking in more capable hardware. Thank God Nintendo is still around because the console market is getting stagnant IMO.
-Online will still be crappier than Microsoft

-Piracy/modding will probably be rampant. IGN showed pictures of burned BD-R media including latest rev games being playable on PS3 hardware (this is how developers are demoing their still under development software). If this is the case, then modchips, etc. are just inevitable).

I'm not going to buy one. I've never been a fan of the PS's, not because they are bad systems but because of their selection of games. I'm looking foward to Gears of War, Halo 3, and a few other Xbox 360 games. The rest of the gaming I do is on my PC.

If there is a game that comes out that looks good, plays good, and is a must have I might pick up a PS3 but not for the price they are now. I've got school to pay for, gas to buy, I don't have enough cash to drop 500/600 on something that just plays games.

The hardware itself and the peripherals look ok to me.

But, personally, I think the launch titles are horrible. Not to say that 360's launch list was good either ...

Playstation 3 has a good games coming but its power of having exclusive has diminished a lot. Resistance fall of Man is sort like Call of duty but with really cool weapons. It will sell real well but i dought it has chance of being big. I would recommend you to buy an xbox 360 instead. Get PS3 when Linux OS is out for it , Final Fantasy 13 , Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. I am still waiting for a game PS3 game blow me away like Gears of War did ;( ... its not FPS but a Cross-hydride of 3rd Person Shooter and Platformer.

Wii60 FTW.

Okay, here's my take on the PS3.

For some reason, I keep thinking in the back of my head that PS3 IS a VERY, VERY good value, no matter how much I deny it. But the price is way too high for a normal consumer. The Wii, on the other hand...its cheap and looks very fun.

I heard something about the memory controller being off the GPU, so AA has a huge hit on performance... Something like that..

Either way I really hate jaggies

I'd most likely get the base model since i can upgrade the hd myself and now that sony has added hdmi output on the base model also,
i just don't see the point of getting the top model

i personally won't be using firewire port and what's the use of memory stick and compact flash slots??

I agree, the launch titles are keeping me from buying this system. I know if I buy it... I eventually will play it more, but it'll sit on my shelf next to my XBOX 360 if I buy one now. I really don't play any of my PS2 games either... I just buy them and they sit there. I've had FF12 since the beginning of last month and that's made me not want to purchase FF13, so there goes the one set of games that always had me buy a Playstation.

Although this week I'm picking up Gears of War (X360) and Lumines II (PSP)!

And that's exactly why some people stick with consoles. So I don't get what you're trying to prove.

Wii on the other hand has a very impressive line up, Zelda alone is enough to wipe out the entire PS3's launch library, man that game is hyping to be good enough to be Game of The Year. Then you have games like Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball, Trauma Center, Rayman Ravin Rabbids, Elebits and then you have games like FarCry and Call of Duty 3 that MIGHT end up looking worse but playing a lot better than PS3/X360 versions and of course there are all the usual games like Madden, NFS or Splinter Cell with clever Wii controller implementations. NOT to mention the included Wii Sports which should prove to be very fun for messing around.

I'm getting a Wii with Twilight Princess, I find Xbox360 and PS3 to be very lackluster consoles (and I loved PS2 and Xbox, I just don't see the same kind of quality in PS3/X360) and the Wii is cheap, innovative and very very fun, who cares about graphics in a console? That is why I have a high end PC to upgrade constantly so I can look at the awesome graphics in FPS while I play them with the superior control scheme (keyboard + mouse).

I too, only like to play FPS games with keyboard and mouse, which explains why i prefer pc over ps2. However, now that sony has added keyboard and mouse support to PS3, i just can't find the reason to go with pc gaming anymore. I simply don't have that much money to go SLI or Crossfire every darn year!!!

he's saying since he already hasa computer for gaming spending 600 on a ps3 is styupid cuz he could buy a G80 for that price.

i know consoles have the price advantage but for ppl into PC gaming who already havea pc a $600 console represent low value. a Wii however at 250 is somewhat easier to swallow.

I bought the PS2 for RPGs, Platform, and Racing games.. i am sure i will buy the PS3 for the same games (when i have the money and my desired games are out). FPS and RTS games are for the computer and i refuse to use any other device to play them on.

Now the Wii... i will buy it for fun games which i can play with my girlfriend and friends.

In the end i will buy a Wii before the PS3... But i also think the Wii is too expensive, it should be $199, it is about 1.5x-2x the power of the gamecube so no reason to pay more than double the game cubes price, but that just what i think.

1920x1080 on a 50 odd inch display just isnt gonna look as good as it on a 24 inch dell display, slightly less pixels on a much larer area = magnify jaggies

smaller pixel pitch FTW!
