jesus, finally....

so this 1:21 video plus the 1:49 Adobe conference video bring us to a grand total of what, 3 minutes of public hands-on so far?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/blackberry-playbook-and-ipad-go-head-to-head-in-a-browsing-showd/

Pretty damn impressive browsing comparison shown too, although as Engadget notes, I'm sure they cherry picked the sites.

Still...point being, Blackberry detractors are going to find something negative to say literally no matter what, but that doesn't change the fact that everything we've seen (from concepts to real demos to price rumors) has been damn impressive with the playbook. Of course it still is too early to tell, but in my opinion, this device is leagues ahead of the iPad or Tab.

Very nice! Yes, I would take a PB over an iPad if this is representative of overall performance and not just the cherry picked sites.

Very nice demo. I'm not sure how easy it is to cherry pick sites. After all, he goes to Uefa.com, CBS, Adidas and the acid3 test. As RIM has no influence on any of those sites or their content, I'm not sure how valid the term 'cherry picked' can be.

Anyone notice the quality of the screen in the Hands on video? No viewing angle issues there, and the thing is almost always at strong angle to the camera.

Here's how it works: You pick the sites that show your product in the most favorable light. The audience is left to presume that they can expect similar performance from all sites.

In reality, the device could be freezing up on 50% of websites, but as long as you show off only the ones that don't, everything looks peachy. With only precious few seconds of actual "hands-on" footage of functional PB devices, this is easy to pull off...

Different engines handle different types of content better. While they don't control the info on those pages, I'm sure they knew what to expect.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying the PlayBook performs poorly in the real world. Just that the test is obviously designed to make them look good. Just look at the IE9 platform tests Microsoft shows with the browser. It runs about 60x faster than everyone else.

The funny thing is that we're all cool with a new device having some rough edges till it gets debugged, and how much effort BB is putting into ensuring they control all the spin about the device...

Why is that funny? Despite claiming you want this to be good, everyone here can plainly see how much you want it to fail, and will find something to complain about, even when there's nothing worthwhile to say.

There's nothing wrong with a company allowing controlled demos until the product is more mature. Maybe in some fantasy world products are 100% polished many months before they're released, but frankly, those fantasy business owners would be idiots, because if they had something ready to market, they should, ya know, sell it.

Marketing spin is a constant source of amusement for me, whether its from Apple, RIM, or their loyal brandfans. However, I also want RIM to succeed - for competitions sake, if nothing else.

These devices are created to meet people's needs. And not everyone's needs are the same. So with all due respect, people should be encouraged to openly express their likes and dislikes with equal intensity. I have yet to see *any* device that meets everyone's individual needs , no matter how polished the "one size fits all" approach is...

LOL, I just don't understand the anger, dude.

You might be very surprised at what I think the mobile market will be like in a year...

This is absolutely true. Right now we have the device that has rebooted the the market for tablets with 95% of the share. What will happen is there will be many offerings from many companies in many styles just as we have with laptops, desktops and smartphones.

Pretty much all the flaws the video points out for the iPad, I noticed as well while using the device. But that's nitpicking.

I'm really impressed with what I've seen of the Playbook so far. It's going to be really hard decision next year whether to pick up the Playbook or the iPad v2.0.

Actually - this is exactly the point I make, over and over again. This forum is full of ridiculous fanboys - whether its fanboys for a specific product/platform, or against a specific product/platform. And no matter what, they will blindly attack other things - even if what they're attacking DOES fit their needs. It gets ridiculous, especially coming from people that use a guise of unbiasedness. It happens over and over again, Blackberry is just a good example of it.

I'm not angry. I just think its amusing how much you seemingly want to hate this product. And frankly, what you think the market will be like and what you want it to be like can be very different things.

you seemingly want to hate this product

Here is where the misunderstanding lies.

What you call hate, I call tough love.

The tech world is littered with great devices that started off as average ones. Those devices only became great through manufacturers' response to consumers' persistent and vocal expression about their products. That means *both* praise and criticism. The best products on the market today are the ones that have an ample supply of both.

No one finds it odd how much the card based multitasking and swipe to close apps resembles WebOS? They could have at least changed it a little bit so it wouldn't look like a direct rip-off.

There's a difference between being critical a product's flaws, and wanting it to be bad to the point that you'll change your stance on what matters, or grossly exaggerate something small, just to better support your "interests". A certain Apple supporter that no longer posts in GG&P was notorious for that.

Another good example was the Galaxy Tab price thread. When it was rumored to be $999, certain people said "lolz the Tab might be nice but its not worth $1000! It should be $500!" And then when the pricing turned out to be in that range, they said "lolz well duh no Gingerbread means no go! It should be $200!"

People on these forums change their tune frequently to support/defame products they like/don't like all the time. It gets tiring is all.

I think tablets should be around $500ish. When the Galaxy Tab was around that price I was ok with it. I still wouldn't buy it though, well I wouldn't buy any tablet just yet.

I think the Playbook looks interesting, my main draw to it would be the browsing experience. If they can get that down perfect I wouldn't mind the other features being a little wonky. The OS looks a lot like WebOS btw.

Hmm - so because the CEO didn't give a release date/price for the PlayBook, and didn't say when BlackBerry phones would get QNX, it makes sense that the company would "founder"....and apparently, the definition of "foundering" is "selling more devices than you ever have before".
