I was playing a DVD the other day using RealOne the other day and had minimized it while I did some work in Photoshop and Dreamweaver Ultradev. But as I worked I noticed that my system (windows 2000 SP4, 785MB DDR RAM, 120GB HD, 1800+ Thoroughbred, ASUS A7N8X Deluxe) got pretty sluggish, especially when scrolling through webpages. I also noticed that while playing the CPU usage was around 60-75%. Most of the CPU usage is going to "System Idle Processes" Some guys who've got similar setups (NFS4 and Adul) said they get around 30% or less usage when playing DVDs.
Thinking that the problem was due to Realplayer, I play the DVD in PowerDVD and get the same effect. I also noticed that the "enable hardware acceleration" checkbox in PowerDVD was ghosted (in stop mode). I've got a 5900 Ultra video card and reinstalled the latest Detonator drivers and nothing changed. Swapped out the card with a Geforce2 and again same effect, high CPU usage and sluggish performance when playing the DVD and working in other programs. I ran ad-adaware thinking some spyware was messing around and that didn't seem to solve the problem.
Can anybody shed light on what's goin on? Is this normal?
